Ran the quotes through confused.com:

Motorcycle Direct came out cheapest for the VFR @ £166 FC.

Asked them to add the Hongdou - '£332, please' [1]

I laugh. Tell them I'll do some phoning around.

Back to confused.com, run a quote on the Hongdou by itself, with no NCB
(using it on the VFR, obviously) - £97.25

Guess I'll be taking out a 2nd policy, 'cos at least I can earn a 2nd
lot of NCB that way.

You can until you have a claim with EITHER of the policies.

Are you sure about that?

I know you have to declare any claims, but they can't take the NCB
earned on one policy off you because you've claimed on another, surely?

Well not "as such", but it does make one wonder why they want to know and
you discover the reason when renewal time comes around.

Well, yes, they'll load the policy because you've had a claim.

However, they also apply the discount that hasn't been affected by the
claim.

I'd certainly prefer to have a 'spare' discount to use if I do have to
make a claim at some point.

To be honest, the VFR is getting to the point now where it would have to
be stolen or completely written off before I'd submit a claim against
it. (Even if written off, it would be a close run thing, 'cos a lot of
bits are worth lots if you break one)
