Just got the renewal notice for my insurance. $671 for comprehensive on a 97
CBR600F. Seems like a lot to me since the bike only cost $6k, the only
reason I have it is because of the finance.
How does this compare with everyone else?

About $300 and something for my 1999 model 650 thumper with Swann. It
cost $6k too, no idea what the "agreed" value is down to. Would guess
yours is more expensive because it's a "sports" bike and you live in
the city.

The 01 Storm was insured for an agreed value of about $13-ish via
Swann. Was very happy with them from a claims process. Premium was
about $1100/yr.

When we upgraded to the Sprint last year, Swann wanted $1800/yr for
comprehensive insurance at $16,500. Gave them the flick, and went with
Suncorp for $1200/yr. Same options - agreed value, same location, etc.

Have just today given Suncorp the flick though - Shannons will do the
same policy, albeit with the "Limited use : 2-3 days /week" option, but
with choice of insurer, first option on the wreck, pay by the month for
no extra, etc, and only wanted $600/yr.

Hence, we signed up with them last week, and are now suitably happy.
The 6 month's refund we're going to get from Suncorp will finance the
next 12 month's of Shannons. Talking to the Shannon's lady, she
indicated that they have been taking quite a bit of business off
Suncorp, and at those prices, I'm not really surprised. Of course,
Suncorp got the last laugh today, hitting me with a $30 Policy
Cancellation Fee. Cheeky bastards.

This is on a rating 1, over 25, no at-fault claims, stored in lock-up
garage, yadda yadda yadda - your location & situation may vary, but I'd
definatly be getting some different quotes. $700 does sound rather high
to my uneducated brain, and the above is proof that shopping around can
make quite a difference.

Good luck - it can be a real pain, trying to get comparable quotes!

When I talked to the (very helpful and knowledgable) girl on the phone,
she said that when the paperwork arrives, it will state "Limited Use"
as 8000kms/year. Don't know what the Very Limited Use threshold is,
didn't ask. We figured that for the $80-ish difference it made for us,
we may as well go the higher option, and then not need to worry.

That said, chatting to the aforementioned girl on this topic, she said
that even though is kms based, they don't require any odometer readings
or anything like that, it's basically done on an honour system, and
they don't have much trouble with it. They know that their customers
like to ride their bikes, and they know that a large percentage of them
will have very limited use mostly, but a few very high milage trips to
rallies, etc, each year. The 8000kms is basically just a guide, and so
long as you're not really taking the yellow-snow-cone, you'll be fine.
Her words were something along the line of "if you've really been doing
40,000kms a year, then the condition of the bike will show that better
than any odometer readings will".

Which is all very nice, really.

Of course, I've not yet made a claim, so have no idea how you'd stand
if they declined your claim based on the fact that the insurance
contract you signed said 8,000kms / year, and you've done 8,500. OTOH,
if they've not asked for any odo readings, I'd imagine that the onus
would be on them to prove that you have done over the allowed , well,
allowance.

Since ours is mainly a weekend toy/runabout, as opposed to our main
commuter, I'm quite happy with the arrangement. If we were using it for
the 300-odd-km weekly commute, my conscience would probably get the
better of me, and I'd knock it up a notch or two.

If you're concerned, give 'em a ring. I didn't have to wait on hold for
long, and the girl was very helpful and knowledgable, somewhat of a
rarity in this day and age of cut-price call centres.

I'm paying well under half that for my 2003 Sv650. But given that I'm 30,
Female, own the bike myself, never have made a claim and live in Adelaide,
that probably helps matters. Knowing where you live, your demographic and
your claim history might help people give some comparison?

Seems pretty cheap to me - My '84 K100RT is insured for $6k, and costs me
$1350/year after my 60% no-claim, and 15% multi-policy discount.. $5
cheaper per month than my ZZR1100 was.. go figure..

Though maybe it's because I'm only 28, and have had three reported accidents
in the last five years..

Cheers,

Damien

I went to a market research group for Shannon's, I think they're after some
new business. I might have to give them a call.

Just did a quote on Shannon's, $650. If I say it's limited use, it's $540.
So how would they prove that you were using the bike more than 3 times a
week?

I live in South west Sydney and have my 2005 Kawasaki Er5 insured for $7,000
agreed value with Swann Insurance and it cost me $342, which i was surprised
since i'm a first time bike rider/insurer and it's cheaper than my 93 magna
which is valued at only $3,700.

The greenslip insurance is a different matter....$361 with NRMA, (Magna was
$326) can't get any cheaper....bloody rip-off!!

$344 for a 2006 DR-Z400E from Western QBE.
Quoted $517 from Swann, $464 from RACV but negociated down to $376 but their
list of will not pay ifs is much longer than QBE, Shannons refused to
quote - off-road use scared them.

$431.00 p.a. QBE, BMW '99 R1100S agreed value $12k, rider 45+, bike
garaged, sole rider, bike declared not primary mode of transport, not
under finance.

I recently renewed without comparing, but from what I read here it's not
so bad?

$370 for $10,000 Z750 not used every day, not under finance, 60% no
claim, older rider. That's with Western QBE. They were running a
campaign to match any other genuine offer; it's now finished but you
could probably persuade them still.

They usually hit you with an additional excess for accidents rather than
ramping up the premium. If you've still got 60% no claim then I doubt
the accidents matter that much. More likley the bike is very expensive
to repair.
