I'm coming back to motorcycling after a layoff of several years. I am
interested in getting a Hayabusa, but was shocked by the insurance rates (I
checked Geiko and Progressive online). I am 34, married, have 0 accidents or
tickets in the last 7 years. Allstate apparently will not write policies on
sportbikes. Can anyone recommend a reasonable insurance company? What are
reasonable rates on sportbikes. I was surprised because the rates given were
higher than those on my Yukon....
Thanks, >> Stay informed about: Insurance |

Some of these guys have found good rates on their busas. I, however,
have not. 38, married, no tickets or accidents, etc..

Good for you! Unless of course you left because neon colors available to
install on your bike weren't as pretty as the fur already on it....

Shocked is the right word, for sure.

Thats what they say sometimes, but I put a gixxer 750 on my bike policy only
a few weeks ago. No problem. They do however, have a no write policy if you
just walk in from the blue and ask for Busa insurance.

State Farm appears to be still winning the bike policy writing contest, but
you might be required to move your cars to them to get their rates.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insurance |

I added an F4i to my Allstate bike policy[1] three months ago,
and it wasn't a problem either.

Adding to an existing policy is one thing most everyone will do.
Most will NOT start a new policy on a Hayabusa however.
One thing you can do is buy a cheapo bike to get insured, then once it is
insured sell it and add whatever you want to your policy.

Can only sympathise with you. I returned to the fold a couple of years ago
after a few years lay-off from bikes. The no-claims bonuses I accrued in the
90s were forgotten and I had to effectively go back to new-rider status,
though my age did count in my favour. Over here, you can't use the no-claims
bonuses accrued on your car insurance.
A sportsbike insurance is way out of my pocket, so I settled for a 600
Bandit, which I traded up to a 1200 this year. I'm quite happy with it TBH,
though I've got my eye on a Z1000 for a couple of years time.
In the UK, the major manufacturers will provide insurance at competitive
rates, but I think that's more to help boost sales in bikes. Pehaps they run
similar schemes in the US.
Happy biking<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insurance |

Didn't work for me. Had bikes continuously with Progressive for longer
than I want to admit, went to add the busa and BLAMMO!

This is nothing new. When I bought a sport bike ten years ago I had to
buy liability insurance only, and self-insure the rest. After the first
year, rates steadily came down.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insurance |

For a good laugh check with Geiko and Progressive...then when you're
serious check with a real insurance company. One reason those two
insurance companies stay in business is advertising. Kinda like Nike
shoes...overpriced third world crap but everyone owns a pair "so they
must be good". Another reason is that they'll cater to high risk
losers that real insurance companies won't touch.
I'm 34, single, no tickets, no accidents and I'm paying $349 a year
for full coverage on my new '04 Hayabusa.
$300K/300K/100K, uninsured, underinsured with $1000 deductible.
If I wanted the lower $250 deductible it would have upped the rate to
$491 a year.
I just went through my local State Farm agent. Where I'm at you have
to insure at least one of your cars with them before they'll accept a
bike. I also have my home owners insurance through them. Amazingly
they also beat everyone else on the car and house too.
After talking to my agent I learned that your particular location and
your credit rating are just as important as your driving record.

Good one Mike! Hey..for your information, when I checked my insurance last,
just for giggles, I asked about Buells. Every single Buell model is
surcharged, just like squid bikes. But not the mighty mite sv! So just
because someone at your insurance company realizes that a boat anchor
powered bike is inherently slow and breaks down enough to keep you from
getting into trouble, don't assume that everyone is able to figure that out.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insurance |

My inurance rates are $220.00 a year for full coverage with a $250.00
deductable. That is one heck of a surcharge.

How many years have you been riding? My insurance for the first year of
owning my sv650 was $950. then the next year it was $520. Im sure it will
drop again this year.
Not bad for a 23 year old begginer! Thats not shared with anything ether. I
use ForeMost insurance for the bike (via Farmer's Insurance) then I have my
truck with Farmer's.
Im thinking that first year is the most expensive, since its new, so its the
most valuable, and its new to the rider, and they dont know if you will biff
it. I have seen all to many "first time rider" videos where they take the
bike straight into a tree. Just like the story about the sales men nick

that's 18 years of legitimate riding. They always me how many years
I've been riding but I don't know if they really check up on it. They
also ask about an MSF course but I've never bothered to take one, that

My first bike was a used Honda CB360T and iirc the insurance was dirt
cheap for just liability even at age 16. I think I was paying around
$80 a year. Eventually I bought my CX500 Custom and it hit rock
bottom at $50 a year and stayed there until I sold it just a few
months ago. Of course full coverage would have put it through the
roof.
$520 doesn't sound bad at all for someone your age on a sport bike.
Location has a lot to do with it too. Seems there's a few states out
east where it's impossible for the average middle class citizen to
obtain full coverage insurance on any car or bike. I've heard of
people paying upwards of $3,000 a year to insure sport bikes. At that
point I'd self insure, every three years I could have a new Busa
