Hey guys, just a quick question about insuring a MX bike. Now that I have
moved into an apartment in the northwest suburbs of Chicago I want to get my
bike here and now I have the GF's TTR125LE here already. Problem is it is on
our balcony right now because the garage I have is shared with other cars. It
has multiple garage doors and I have my own assigned spot, but inside it is
open to all the other cars. This makes me nervous to store our bikes in there,
so I had planned to anchor them to the ground with some heavy-gauge security
cables and block their view so they can't be seen easily. Since an ambitious
thief could still get through the cables I plan on using, I want to insure them
as well. Problem is every place I have tried treats them like a road bike and
the insurance is about like what you would get with PLPD. I want JUST
theft/fire/storm (comprehensive) coverage. Anybody got any experience with
this?

State Farm offers what you are after.

Rather than just blocking the view to the bikes, cover them with some old
tarps or blankets.

Another thought is to rent a storage unit somewhere. If it makes you
sleep better at night, it will be worth the monthly fee.

No experience per se, but you might want to investigate an alarm.
Doing a quicky google search on "motorcycle alarm", looks like from
about $70 on up to several hundred bucks depending on features.

I pay $65 per year per bike through Progressive.

If you have 3 or more bikes, the per bike cost goes way down from that
too...

I checked around with some insurance companies before posting this, but they
all wanted WAY too much. I think state farm wanted $300/year for my YZ125 and
$180/year for the TTR125. Progressive so far has the best rate at $244/year
for both bikes, but I still think that is a bit high...but maybe that's just
me...

I imagine a big part of the cost depends on where you live. I imagine
eastern WA is a lot lower than Chicago area.

I think I'm paying around $100 per year for liability/comprehensive.
My bikes are plated, so liability insurance is a must.

Don't forget Aaron is a youngster. This will certainly result in higher
liability rates.

Let's see,

The $65 per bike is for an '02 KTM 200exc and a '96 XR250R

That $65 is for:

1. Liability $25K/$50K/$10K
2. Underinsured Motorist $25K/$50K
3. Underinsured Motorist Property Damage $10K with $100 deductable
($300 hit & run)
4. Comprehensive $100 deductable
5. $1,000 custom parts & equipment included, e.g., steering damper,
pipe guard, skid plate, hand guards

When I had three bikes insured (all XRs) the TOTAL was $157 per year
for all three.

When I had four bikes insured the total was $199 per year for all four.

I'm doing a DRZ400 with liability, comp, and collision, and a xr70 with just
liability for $212 a year with progressive. You actually want more than
liability for the theft coverage. I had to go full on the DRZ because it is
licensed otherwise I would just have liability.
