I was chatting with my sister this evening, and she's made a somewhat
worrying discovery. She's been borrowing a car for a few days, driving
it on the "car not owned by you..." bit of her (Direct Line) policy.
She needed to use it for work, and rang Direct Line to check that she'd
be covered (expecting them to say "not for work").
It turns out that she's not covered *at all*.
Direct Line say that in the small print of the policy booklet it says
such cover only operates "in an emergency". They're right, it does, in
the explanatory notes.
Their definition of "an emergency" is (apparently) such things as moving
the vehicle after an accident. You're definitely (according to them)
*not* covered for a "my car's broken, can I borrow yours?" type event.
That's surprised me quite a bit, and it seems I've (unknowingly) done
quite a few un-insured miles in the last few years.
Time to change insewerance companies, I think. Unless, of course,
they're all the same...
I think I'll be checking the fine print on the bike policy too.

I recently confirmed that I had TPO cover while driving herself's motor,
and she on mine (she's also with DL) and they said a hearty "yes, you
are."
But they are utter, unmitigated cunts. They stitched herself up over an
accident she had, where the other party was at fault, yet they called it
50/50 because the other party was also a DL customer, so it makes good
economic sense for them to knacker 2 sets of NCB.
As soon as I'm able to afford to go elsewhere I shall. Sadly, despite
their shit service (or, more likely, because of), they're the cheapest
for me (and her) by quite a margin.

I renewed my bike insurance with Auntie Carol last year. She decided to
transfer my policy from RSA to Equity Red Star. As part of the process she
removed my CIHAGM entitlement. Fucking bitch.

Check your renewals carefully. They sneakily increased my excess without
request meaning other quotes were not like for like.
Their repair centre in Leeds is a shambles too. They kept my cage for 3
weeks before starting work, then returned it with half the badges missing on
tailgate and those that there applied were the wrong badges in the wrong
position. Within 12 months the paint was flaking off and I took it
elsewhere to rectify. My chosen sprayshop highlighted what a complete bodge
DL had made (using huge amounts of filler on a shunted tailgate rather than
replace it).
I just switched to NU after 14 years with DL and the Mrs will no doubt be
following too when her renewal is due later in year. If NU didn't run that
bloody quote me happy ad campaign then I would be chuffed about it.

I've just arranged insurance for my Mum's house with NU. Purchased via the
ASDA website. Significantly cheaper than an NUDirect quote.
Also, DL underwrite Tesco's policies at frequently cheaper prices. Both
companies are utter cunts though.
Bear that in mind at renewal time.

I just finished a claim for a car broken into, sorted out with no fuss,
new window, window mech and stereo, total £500 - £250 excess.
Also a claim for my hearing aids (lost on a bloody plane) They're
paying out £2.5k (which is the max for personal belongings) which I'm
pretty chuffed about, reduces the cost for replacements down to £900.
All done though DL. So I got no complaints with them.

Just had my renewal from CN and it too has switched to Equity Red Star
*but* it still keeps the CIHAGM element, which is nice.

My bike cover changed last year and it lost the "not owned by you..."
bit, but the car policy covers me for both cars and motorbikes not owned
by me. Why a car policy includes bikes is anybody's guess but its nice to
have.

I did try Tesco expecting them to be cheaper, but NU have 20% off online
quotes this month and that brought them way under Tesco price. Now can
someone explain to that bloke off Royle Family which is the offside of his
car before I run into him as well. I was also disappointed to discover the
online quote form has more than two fields (number of doors and colour).
That's all they ever seem to need in the ads.

Sounds like their Brum "repair centre"; I had huge arguments with them
over the write-off value of my 323. Sending them lots of ads from
Autotrader and the like did nothing to shift their position, and I came
this >< close to legal action before they relented and paid me a
reasonable value for it.
(actually, they relented so much that I ended up getting 2 years and
50,000 miles of motoring for £275, but that of course doesn't take into
account the loading on my premium)

heh. IKWYM. It's sodding annoying. ATM the only ad that winds me more is
that "Organics" "now you can have 2 organic experiences" one with the
hatchet faced old bat being annoyed no-one has shafted her in a coon's
age [1], where it's painfully clear no-one in their right mind would
wave so much as a chipolata at her ... I keep looking out for a later
version that says "not even Whinging Courier would shag me!" but nothing
yet.
[1] not a racist term, it refers to raccoons

So noted, ta. Renewal is 3 months away and this year I'm determined to

I've had massive probs with them before and herself got stitched *right*
up by them, so that particular seed is falling on fallow ground here,
mate; if I can get a quote within 10% of theirs at renewal time they can

SOME DO, YES. BUT MINE WAS ONLY £19.99 FROM DIRECT LINE! IT'S AS GOOD AS
