The big showdown between Indian Larry, and Billy Lane in the "Biker
Buildoff" was a good representation of that "old school" means more than a
style of chopper.

When Billy Lane had _major_ problems getting his scooter to start , and run,
Indian Larry jumped in to lend a hand, worked his ass off to get this thing
to run, and ended up making the problem solving suggestion. Then, when the
crowd in Sturgis voted him the winner, he insisted that Billy share in the
"prize".

Contrast that with Paul Yaffe showing his ass, and ignorance, on the program
before, or the piss poor attitude of Dave Perewitz' pals.

Contrast the Gasoline Alley shop environment with that of Orange County
Choppers.

Contrast bikes that can be ridden in a variety of environments with trailer
queens.

I'll take "old school" any day over the new.

I especially liked it when they fired up the grinder and cut the fucking
"trophy" in helf (well... pieces actually).

The coolest part was when the producers approached Larry, as they wqere
already a day behind at that point, and told him that if he would insist on
leaving "right now" that Billy would have to forfeit. He blew them off and
went back to helping get Billy's bike squared away.

I didn't see the show, but I've seen Indian Larry on other shows and he
definately seems to have a good attitude about riding and building. And
yes, I'll take old school over the shiney chrome whores anyday, but then I
think my ride shows that more than anything. <g>

Pretty soon I'll have to stop calling it "my ride" and start calling it "my
project" again.

Yaffe, Perewitz, and Bourget *seem* to have a cager mentality
towards bike building as they're just too ultra modern and slick
AFAIC. Billy Lane's bikes are more radical old school while
Indian Larry's are more traditional, but both have that biker
mentality and are guyz I'd like to hang with.

I recall only too well all those Arlen Ness styled Ironheads in
the streets of Hayward and nearby communities with narrow
springers, trick paint, and lotsa chrome plus struts in place of
shocks when many of us were riding sleazy Shovelheads or
Panheads.

Long live the ratbikes.

You and me both. I'm still not sure about that damn hubless
nightmare...but I can appreciate the process that goes into somebody
starting a project with "why don't we try THIS?"

As for the show, never seen it, never will. Not having a TV gives me
more time for riding. *sigh*...and wrenching, as a head job appears to
be looming on the horizon, if the clattering which sounds like a stuck
valve is any indication.

But I can speak to the trophy, made by these guys:

Thanks for the Dr Pepper, now then... I really must insist that you *never*
mention OCC resident nitwits in the same thread as Indian Larry, Billy Lane
or Dave Perewitz. Paul Yaffe threads would be OK I guess. AFA the "Build
Off", you might be able to buy it on VHS at discovery.com butt I ain't sure
about that.

When was this on? I was hoping they put those 2 against each other and
now I've missed it! Of course being cable, they'll show it 50 freakin'
times...

I met Perewitz this summer at a run and he seemed like like a nice guy, down
to earth, and very approachable. Ol' Dave's been around the bike world for a
long time. When it wasn't "accepted" to have a bike Dave was doing his
thing. Yaffe seemed like an arrogant cunt (that guy on the phone should have
told him to fuck off and die for being such a dick to him), but when
Perewitz met with Lane, he looked at his bike and said, "Looks Nice Bill!"
all the other measuring bullshit was ballbusting... good old american Ball
bustin"
Perewitz' pals made have been dicks, but who doesn't have friends that are
dicks!
I have to admit IL would be a cool guy to hang with, as long as he's the
same guy as on the program. He did show true class.

my 2 cents

Skiv, thanks for jogging my memory banks on that one... After I saw it, all
I could think about was putting a wire cage on each side and putting
hamsters in it... and taking a nice slow ride so they could exercise...

And then doing a burnout...

Maybe sealing both sides in glass... and adding gold fish... not those
little store-bought babies... those big Japanese_garden_pond_honkers.

And then doing a burnout...

Butt then I thought.... the *ultimate*... cage both sides, put in a perch...
YEAH BABY... birds... colorful ones..

And then doing a burnout...
