I expect that the distributors tried to find a dealer and most said "no,
we can't be bothered".
Being a dealer doesn't just mean getting a sign painted. You usually
ahve to buy floor stock and spares, and you have to believe you'll sell
enough of them at a decent margin to make it worthwhile.
A dealer who already has say a Suzuki franchise isn't going to sell
Hyosung. Neither will a Honda dealer. Why sell a direct competitor to
your higher margin bikes that means you have to cut prices on them?
Probably no one with a Jap franchise will, either because of upfront
money and margin, or because the distributor has a quiet word...
So the ones who will take it up will be small shops. Maybe currently
doing a European brand, or no brand at all. And a small shop *always*
has rumours about being dubious, because human nature says someone's
sure they've been ripped off. And because the small shops look seedy
as looking flash is dead money as far as they are concerned, then the
dodgy name has more of a chance of sticking.
Some places are a bit dodgy of course. I have in mind a couple of
Adelaide shops that went through several dealership agreements and lost
them because of problems. Mainly too greedy, taking on more than they
could manage, and cutting corners in the service dept.
