The Kid's girl friend, who he's been teaching to ride dirtbikes, has
gotten the kid into horsey riding, in particular Show Jumping, to the
point where the kid has joined the Equestrian Team at his college.
Needless to say that Dad has to outfit him in the proper gear, so off we
go this past weekend to buy a pair of Breeches, what rednecks would call
Britches, I call em Horsey pants. These things look more like long
underwear than any pants I've seen before, except they've got some thin
leather patches sewn into the inside of the knees, I guess for gripping
the tank..I mean horse. We looked at several different brands of these
fuckers, and decided on a mid priced pair, for One Hundred and Fifty
U.S. Dollars. As I'm holding these things in my hand, which couldn't
weigh more than a few ounces, I'm thinking No Kevlar, No Ballistic
Nylon, No Bio-Foam pads, No Big Rubber Logos down the legs, No Shit,
Someone is gettin screwed here. I did learn a valuable lesson, I will
NEVER AGAIN bitch about the cost of MX pants!!!!!

Next thing you know, he'll be shirking his beer drinking duties and
joining the white wine tasting team.

Nip that horse shit in the bud.

And yes, I did stupid shit in college to get...ummm...dates too.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I would have told him to wear his Thor or whatever pants, MX boots and
helmet instead of that useless horsey lid and shiney boots. Don't forget to
make ring-a-ding noises while holding the reins.

Those funny pants, jackets, and hardhats are very dangerous; an honest horse
will be laughing so hard he'll fall over and roll around, damaging the
fashion accessories.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Horse stuff is so expensive, I laugh at people who think riding bikes is
expensive. Kevin's pissed off at me at the moment because I have started
looking at horses again. I am tired of sucking at this sport and ready to
start doing something I rule at again. I need something in my life that can
counteract the extreme ego deflation I experience every time I get on my
motorcycle...

I recommend finding him another girlfriend, THAT one is going to be the most
expensive wife he could possibly find. Trust me.

Boy, you are sure right about horses being expensive. They can go
through $3000 of good veterinarian drugs in a few months when they
have an injury. My girl friend is a team roper and travels a lot of
miles each year, so she has to have a new Chevy 3/4 ton, 8.2L with the
five speed, Allison tranny. Oh, and you got to have a good 28' three
horse slant trailer, and $2700 Tod Slone saddle. Wrangler 20X jeans
are standard and Cactus shirts, and Justin Ostrich boots, and about
$1000 in misc cowboy hats, belts, ropes, bridles, bits, etc. Entry
fees can run upwards of $300+ and if you miss the first steer you are
done, because you have to keep catching them to keep in the match.
Feed, hay, supplements, manure handling equipment (or me), cats to
keep birds and mice out of your barn, and don't forget a good blue
heeler dog (every cow person has to have one), and at least 5 acres of
pasture for supporting four horses. Horse shoeing runs about $300
every eight weeks. Good thing she owns a Western and Tack store in
town, that keeps the costs down a little. Oh, and she has to have
Buckskin horses cuz they look prettier (but cost more).

I race MX for a hobby now since my other hobby became my job. I make
my living building high tech custom firearms for competition shooting,
but what some shooters spend on that hobby doesn't hold a candle to
horses. I used to think a $3000 handgun and $1000 of equipment was
insane for just shooting holes in the atmosphere. I even started
flying coast to coast to compete, needed all the latest cool gear and
modifications, buying mills and lathes, spending hundreds of hours at
the range practicing, etc.

Motorcycles are cheap (just don't crash)

I ride both.
My daughter and I ride reining horses, and a I have a dirt bike. I'm pretty
intense and competitive on the reiner, I just trail plonk and relax on my
bike. For whatever reason, most folks who ride bikes equate "good" with
"fast". I equate "good" with "fun" and "relaxing".
It's all good though, I enjoy both.

I feel exactly the same way, I am happy as a clam riding along whistling to
myself and enjoying the scenery. Unfortunately I have yet to find anyone
that rides dirtbikes that feels the same way I do.

A horse trainer buddy and I were talking the other day and he summed it up
thusly: "Women like to ride. Men like to compete."

Not true for all people, but probably true for the large middle part of the
bell curve.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Gay humor ... not the usual Kali response.

I'm sure you got the joke so I won't bother explaining it. Smile

If Christopher Reeves had been dressed for the crash like most sensible
MX'rs who where a chest protector, neck roll and full face helmet--he'd
likely be walking now.

If my duaghter was not into horses, my son and I could be styling in a 30'
toy hauler and a new truck to pull it with up North to the trails!

If you son wants a horse--have him buy it on his own and board it! They are
way too much work--you can't let them sit in the trailer for a week after a
ride and forget about them! I think a horse is higher maintenance than some
skinny, underfed, spoiled, botox'ed fashion model.

HOWEVER--if your son's girlfriend comes from a wealthy family AND can and
will clean air filters--she's a KEEPER!

At my advancing age, I find myself enjoying slower paced, more scenery
oriented trail rides, the problem is that when I go slow, I tend to
worry about running over Lizards and Snakes. A few weeks back, I hit a
tree because I was watching a young Mountain Lion, sunbathing on a rock,
instead of watching the trail.
