Barbz's notion of some shorter check rides has considerable merit. You
might also consider having it checked out by a regular mechanic. I'd
consider changing fuel filters at this point by default as well.
There's probably water in the gas tank, look for rust as well.

The pedal should operate the left front brake as well as the rear
brake.
Some people disapprove of this arrangement, but my Moto-Guzzi had a
similar system, and I liked it. For touring or cruising, it's a plus.
I'm no expert, but I should think that following the linkages from the
pedal you should find where things go wrong pretty smartly.
