Just thinking of doing alittle wokring holiday, do some fruit picking
ect and see Australia at the same time, would the Honda VTR250 be a
good option or do you recommend somthing bigger better ect ?

Thanks.

I almost went around Australia on mine..

3-4 day trips are fine, she is very good on fuel too..

when loaded up with gear you may find your self in 3-4 on hilly area's
onlying 80-90k's - but she will get you their if your patient enough..

if you can afford a 1000cc touring bike, it would be better, but if you got
a vtr250 why not use it, I did 30,000 touring k's on mine, and quite a few
1500k's trips from Bundaberg to Goulburn and back several times...

cheers

Depends on your priorities.

Having done long miles on a 250 with much less power than a VTR, I can't
see any problem with go, but lots will.

Luggage might be a bit of a worry, they aren't the best setup for that.

Depends a lot on your price range and licence class.

If you have not much money, then buy something old and cheap and bodge
luggage up. You get the best ttories for later that way Smile

If you have money for a newish bike like that, then buy it, work out the
luggage, and you will manage fine.

If you have the money, and leisurely rides just going places and
relaxing aren't your thing, then get a middleweight that's a few years
old.

You can do pretty much anything on anything ... oh, well, GoldWings
in the mud I'm not so sure of, but CB250RSes, GPX250s and CT110s
have been ridden around Australia.

And if you're trying to live off fruit picking, a small bike with
frugal fuel consumption is going to be a good thing.

You won't have a lot of luggage capacity, though ... yes, yes
Hammo, I've seen how much crap you can tie to a 250 ...
and you might find the nakedbike thing tiring for long days.

But if you're happy to travel light and stop a little more
often, you shouldn't have any problems.

You know, you could have combined this thread with your Virago and
NRMA ones and made the question a one-stop shop?

Anyhoo, to travel around Australia I'd recommend you have either:

(a) A new (but run-in, so ~5,000km) bike, NRMA Super Ultra Deluxe
membership, and a credit card capable of buying you a flight home;

(b) Any old bike, the ability to fix it with duct tape and cable ties
(or fencing wire, if you're a hillbilly like myself), ...and a credit
card capable of buying you a flight home.

Here's my round-Australia trip, aboard a 14-year-old GPX250 that had
70,000km on the clock when I started:

You can probably tell which option I chose from the above list. Wink

I had one of those bikes (my first) and it was a lot of fun on short
rides and off the main roads but you'll want something bigger if you
want to travel distances like that (or else take it very slow and easy
and just do short trips each day, exploring back roads rather than
highways). High revs at cruising speed and the leaning forward riding
position are not conducive to staying on for hours at a time.

If you want to stay small there are lots of nice 250cc and even some
550cc cruisers.

And you can bet that the bod who has the new bike and no personal input,
just buys it all and pays his way out of trouble will have no where near
as many good stories and good memories.

Fixing bikes isn't that hard if you think abut what you are doing and
have enough duct tape.

bigger...unless you reckon doing 800kms on a 250 just to get between cities is
gonna be fun...

Yes! It is fun! Either the sense of achievement, or the slower pace
and the stopping and seeing things. Indeed, just the fact it's riding
a bike.

Sure, passing trucks can take a little planning, but on the whole doing
the speedlimit ain't going to kill you.

If wandering about the Great Divide two up on an MZ150 didn't kill the
bloke I met in Lismore, doing the distances between fruit jobs on
a VTR won't kill anyone.

That's not round Australia. That's round one of the islands.
