Silly question, are there any half decent sites with info on the bike
racing at bathurst back in the early 80's that you know of?

I'm trying to think of some of the riders from that era, the only one I
can think of was Greg Hansford, was Gardner racing there in that era?

I was never a Bathurst fan Tim but I think Gardner did race there on a
Ducati 860 of all things!
King of Bathurst was Ron Toombs but Warren Willing, Murray Sayle (as well as
their little brothers) and Kenny Blake were very successful there as well as
later riders like Rob Phillis, Mike Dowson, Mal Campbell, Kevin Magee etc.
Pretty-much anyone who currently runs a Sydney bike-shop too!

(PS; "that era" spans about 50 years!! Bathurst had motorcycle racing from
1949ish right through to late 90s but the heyday for me was the big
2-strokes of Willing & Hansford)

The main Bathurst Bikes was the Easter Races and that really packed them in
and really set things alike. If you ever get a chance to do a quick lap
around Bathurst you will realise the riders back then must have had big
balls because there are not many safe spots to crash now and back then there
were basically only two were you could run of( End of Conrad and the Start
straight ) .

I remember seeing the lunatics that rode side cars around Bathurst but they
didnt have big balls as they were just crazy.

I met Ron Toombs son last weekend, he works at Central Coast
Motorcycles. Bought a bike off him actually Smile

They have a couple of his old TZ's stashed away in the showroom.

Tim asks -

The racing museum at Murray's corner has about 1/3 of the space devoted to
bikes and a lot of the racers mentioned by others are well represented (esp
G Hansford). Fair amount of useful info on placards - didn't bother to check
out the bookshop outside but I suspect there would be stuff there.

Thing I liked about it is all the exhibits looked like they just parked them
and let them cool down after their last race - no cosmetics, just how they
were - talk about minimalist.

You can use the road circuit afterwards (at 60 klicks!) and amaze yourself
just how tight it gets over the top of the mountain.

Also worth calling into is the Lithgow small arms factory, where we took a
first small independent step making firearms independently of the Brits (if
you like things that go bang).

Best , Andrew [any excuse to go Bells line of road ...]
