History Channel tonight had a show on "extreme machines" about some of
the most significant bikes ever built.
Starting with a 4 valve head 1000cc V twin Indian that they raced on
board surfaced tracks, the first BMW bike, an R32 500cc (of which the
technology has changed little), history of the Vincent/HRD, a story on
Captain America, the chopper used in Easy Rider to the (blech) Ducati
999R.
Interestingly, the 999 sells for around $30,000 USD or $40,000 AUD,
nearly $20,000 AUD below what it sells for here.
It was getting a bit annoying, with the Ducati dealers that they
interviewed stating that the road bike hardly differed to the superbike
version, save some cheaper fairings, etc..
Pity they didn't talk about the customer version that non-factory riders
get stuck with and compared it to the factory version.
Still, a good show, if you don't mind the full on presentation by an
ex-wrestler.
