Hey guys!

I've been riding forever yet I still don't know if my basics are
solid! Here's what I think... please add to it or correct it.

Basic riding techniques:

1. In turns, always weight the outside foot peg. The center of
gravity goes from your butt high on the seat, to low on the peg. (I
remember Marty Smith saying that he weighted the inside peg... I
can't argue with Marty but I'm too wuss to do that...).

2. Ride with your legs. This includes gripping the bike with your
legs constantly. You may have to let loose a bit while skimming the
whoops like Bubba, Ricky et al... But for the average guy... hold on!

3. Always keep a finger on both the clutch and front brake. Why miss
half a second getting to the brake lever. More importantly, if you
ever get whiskey throttle you'll be stoked that all ya gotta do is
clean out your shorts, since you were able to pull in the clutch....

4. NEVER LOCK your knee!!! ((Almost loss of leg (artery problem) and
3 years rehab to 70% makes me a true believer...))

5. "When in doubt, GAS IT!" Was a killer slogan when I was young.
That phylosophy has bitten me too may times. Sometimes holding off on
the throttle and trying to control the situation/crash is the thing to
do...

Any additions or corrections???

Much appreciated!!!

In a collision involving the front wheel of one bike and the rear wheel
of another, the front wheel bike will almost certainly go down first.

Weight the inside peg to initiate the turn, and then what you do will
be determined by the bike, it's handling characteristics, power
delivery, and where you are.
example from woods turns:
1.'87 Husky 430. once turn is started, weight the outside peg to keep
the rear end connected to the ground
2. '96 DR350. try this and the bike will quit turning and stand up,
going straight.
3. Any GasGas. try this and you will not only quit turning, but start
turning the other way.

Good. Feet & ankles, mostly.

You go where you look. Keep your eyes up and don't get caught looking
only a few feet ahead of the front wheel. Impossible ot go fast if
you're not looking far enough forward.
