Hey knowledgeable people; what about fuels?
Would E10 be better for Betty with ethanol's lower freezing point and it's
hydroscopic ability?

Betty; no matter what the temp I've found that higher-octane fuels have
made my bikes run and idle better. If you use just low-octane ULP try a
tank or two of 95 or even 98 premium unleaded.

If you don't know the octane of the Optima you just put a "x" there; so
we'll call that fuel Optimax!

Others will provide scientific and logical reasons why I'm wrong but my
seat-of-the-pants reckons I get better running AND about 10% further from a
tank of 98 so while it only costs about 8% more I reckon it's worthwhile!

The last time I attacked someone in here for using Shell Optimax I got
told to stfu, but to be fair he was trying to solve some other problem
entirely.

Clem gets his bike to run better on 95 'octane' because its a late-80s
BMW that was designed to run on that fuel as a minimum - it's the most
prevalent fuel in Europe. Your bike was designed to run on 92 'octane'
(common in Japan and Australia), and since it gets much colder in Japan
than it does in Canberra, it should be possible to tune the bike on 92
'octane' for the cold weather without it stalling at idle.

E10 might help. Kawasaki don't recommend it for any model, but none of
the Japanese vendors do AFAIK. Personally I dislike the way the bike
smells after burning a tankful of the stuff.

Having spent most of my life in the blue Mountains & commuting on snow & ice
in winter, I've seen
quite a number of highly experienced riders caught out by "black ice" on
frosty mornings.
Just wanted to warn you of the extra hazards.

It's ok IK. I don't think Grump was trying to scare me - it was an
answer to a question about snow. (Besides, while I'm cautious, I'm not
that easily scared!) In my 10 years in Canberra I've only seen any real
fair dinkum snow once (in about 2000/01?) - and I've never actually
driven my car, let alone ridden the bike, in that sort of weather - so
it was a sort of curiosity thing on my part really.

Having said that though, I intend riding to from Canberra to Bombala in
a couple of weeks, as a birthday present to me... I think it might be
a little bit colder there than in Canberra, but I'll be riding during
the day and I'm thinking snow oughtn't be an issue... just need to rug
up a lot and hope the bike doesn't stall all the time!

Happy birthday to you ...

Now, hairy off-road types often reckon you can get through the ice and
snow by either wrapping rope around your tyres, or by driving
self-tapping screws into the tread-blocks of your tyres, but I'm not at
all sure that either of those ideas apply to a GPX250.

Just to present the opposite opinion...

My Monster has Mikuni CV carbs which have brass emulsion tubes (or
needle jets). The needles "rattle" in the brass tubes (apparently
exacerbated by the normal v-twin vibes) and eventually oval the holes in
the jets out, leading to the bike running richer than it should. By the
time the jets have done 50,000km or so, its actually running right on
the borderline of too rich so you can tell the difference between the
"high density" premium fuels (like Optimax) and regular fuel - it'll run
OK-ish on some fuels, but cough and splutter after a few minutes at a
constant 80kmh cruise using Optimax.

(Having said that, I suspect running slightly richer due to a high
density fuel is more likely to help Bettys cold running problem than
hinder it...)
