Hey, I like downtube shifters, but brake cables should surely be routed
inside the handlebars.

I'm hoping I can get it going while spending bugger all, I'm after
something I wouldn't mind leaving locked up outside the local shops, not
the case with my current bike, I don't leave that along at all.

Pulled the cranks apart and lots of bearings fell out, so I'm going to
need to replace those, not sure if they're a standard size, I'll check
in with a local bike shop at some point shortly, I'll pull the wheel
hubs apart and check those bearings as well, gunna need tyres as well,
but other then that it looks ok, I'll just lube up all the gears and
cables and leave em be.

Ah, now that just reminds me...
I assume the tape on the cross bar is for fitting into those funny
thingies that fit on a car's tow bar, and allow you to dangle bycycles
from... dunno what you call 'em.

Anyhow, I have one of them sitting in my garage.

Bought new, it has never been used.

It is for sale, or exchange for Cooper Stout.

Actualy no, it's a bit of paper with "free" written on it, The rack
would be handy, but I'm going to be carless in under a month so I
wouldn't get much use out of it.

Looks rather nice, I'd ditch those suicide brake levers though if I
were you.

Let me know if you need any bits, I've got half a dozen recycling
crates full of parts that will fit it. e.g. Do you want a nice alloy
triple crankset for it? Wink

Lemmiwinks has had good success with one of these sealed units in the
bottom bracket:

They're pretty cheap:

http://tinyurl.com/2aoqye

Make sure you use a cone spanner when putting the locknuts back on the
axles, I can tell you from experience that you *can't* get themtight
enough with a pair of long-nose pliers. :-/

> gunna need tyres as well,

K-mart and Big W still sell cheap 27x1 1/4 tyres, about $10. They've
got tubes for $4.50 as well.

Brake cables only cost $4, and you live in a hilly area don't you? By
the way, are those brake calipers alloy or thin pressed steel units?

That shouldn't happen, simply due to the drive side having a left-hand
thread. (Unless it's a French bike).

I've got plenty of suitable kit. Do you want me to post it, or do you
have a reason to trip down here after new year's (Minx and I are going
to Armidale and back between xmas-NYE, but we're taking the inland
route).

I'll need you to accurately measure your current handlebar stem, and
tell me what diameter it is.

Hmmm, wouldn't that just be going a bit overboard, it's a beater,
something I won't mind leaving outside the local shops, I don't want it
all blinged up Smile

Now if you had a set of indexed shifters for it, I'd be willing to have
a discussion

A sealed bottom-bracket unit will probably still work. Do they need
the drive-side threads intact, Lemmiwinks?

I just went for my first ride on it, the drive side of the bottom
bracket managed to unscrew itself, I enjoyed the walk home from there,
I'll add a large helping of loctite and excessive force when I put it
back together, it's interesting riding a bike where none of the wheels,
the seat, or the bars line up, I'll sort that out at some point after I
fix the BB.

Some flat bars would be great, not really worried about the shifters,
they can stay where they are, for the use it's going to get it's going
to spend most of it's life in the one gear anyway. I figure I'd just
need the bars and the brake levers to suit, I contemplated buying some
off that ebay site you linked to, but if you've got some spares that
would be great

MULGA BILL'S BICYCLE by A.B. "Banjo" Paterson
'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze;
He turned away the good old horse that served him many days;
He dressed himself in cycling clothes, resplendent to be seen;
He hurried off to town and bought a shining new machine;
And as he wheeled it through the door, with air of lordly pride,
The grinning shop assistant said, "Excuse me, can you ride?"

"See here, young man," said Mulga Bill, "from Walgett to the sea,
From Conroy's Gap to Castlereagh, there's none can ride like me.
I'm good all round at everything as everybody knows,
Although I'm not the one to talk - I hate a man that blows.
But riding is my special gift, my chiefest, sole delight;
Just ask a wild duck can it swim, a wildcat can it fight.
There's nothing clothed in hair or hide, or built of flesh or steel,
There's nothing walks or jumps, or runs, on axle, hoof, or wheel,
But what I'll sit, while hide will hold and girths and straps are tight:
I'll ride this here two-wheeled concern right straight away at sight."

'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that sought his own abode,
That perched above Dead Man's Creek, beside the mountain road.
He turned the cycle down the hill and mounted for the fray,
But 'ere he'd gone a dozen yards it bolted clean away.
It left the track, and through the trees, just like a silver steak,
It whistled down the awful slope towards the Dead Man's Creek.

It shaved a stump by half an inch, it dodged a big white-box:
The very wallaroos in fright went scrambling up the rocks,
The wombats hiding in their caves dug deeper underground,
As Mulga Bill, as white as chalk, sat tight to every bound.
It struck a stone and gave a spring that cleared a fallen tree,
It raced beside a precipice as close as close could be;
And then as Mulga Bill let out one last despairing shriek
It made a leap of twenty feet into the Dean Man's Creek.

'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that slowly swam ashore:
He said, "I've had some narrer shaves and lively rides before;
I've rode a wild bull round a yard to win a five-pound bet,
But this was the most awful ride that I've encountered yet.
I'll give that two-wheeled outlaw best; it's shaken all my nerve
To feel it whistle through the air and plunge and buck and swerve.
It's safe at rest in Dead Man's Creek, we'll leave it lying still;
A horse's back is good enough henceforth for Mulga Bill."
