| Hi, I bought a 95 ZX7R last week. The bike was riding good when i bought it then the day after i got it i noticed there wasnt oil and it wasnt starting. So i bought 10-W40 auto fully synthetic oil and put it in. It then started and ran for about 2 days. Then it didnt want to turn over and i wound up draining the battery trying to start it. I bought a tender and fully charged the battery, I still cant get it to turn over. Could the oil be the problem? If i didnt put the right oil in can it have messed something up? I try starting with the choke and it still wont work. I dont know what else to check it sounds like it isnt getting any gas but the tank is full. Please help me, thanks.

You probably need to find a local shop who can sell you the
right oil and maybe give the bike a quick check up.
If it was running fine when you turned the key off, then
it probably didn't break while it was sitting there parked.
Most likely you've got a "prime" position on the gas
petcock to feed gasoline to the engine. If you had it
on "run" instead of "prime", then it wouldn't start.
Too much oil is almost as bad as not enough. You really
need some good local advice. Was it leaking oil ?
I think you probably qualify as the first newby/helpme
post of the riding season.
Congratulations. >> Stay informed about: Help Needed please |

So you ran it awhile without oil? I'd suggest you hire a bugle man and
send it off to the junkyard after a proper playing of the taps. Or you
can pay a couple of grand to refurbish the cylinders and you will have
spent $4k for a $2k bike, but at least it'll run... >> Stay informed about: Help Needed please |

It needs spark, fuel and compression. All of these can be tested.
When you pull the plugs after cranking it, are the plugs wet
or dry ? Fuel problems are typically the cheapest problems.
When you lay a plug on the engine and crank it, do you
get a good spark ?
A compression guage costs maybe $20 ? You can only test
with the carbs either removed or wide open. Compression
problems are typically the most expensive.
At a shop, I'd expect to pay for maybe one hour of
shop time to get a much better analysis of my problem(s)
and might consider going that route on a newly purchased
bike. >> Stay informed about: Help Needed please |

Great beginner bike though!
You "noticed there wasn't oil and it wasn't starting"? What did you
notice first?
Back to square one, buy a bicycle, learn to ride it, then a minibike
with an automatic clutch, then maybe, if you live long enough you can
graduate to a small scooter and finally to a real motorcycle. Somehow
I think you'll manage to break every one of them before their time.
I called 1-800 YOU TROLL, and they had you on their waiting list for
beginner troll lessons. >> Stay informed about: Help Needed please |

Honestly, that's good advice, but I've personally never had any luck

In that case, put up a "For Sale" sign. It will get the hint. }: )

Hmmmm - I'm guessing your report cards from there at the
junior high all have something written on them about
"doesn't work and play well with others," right?

Thank you. I was inspired this morning by HWMNBN's post on the crucial
importance of distinguishing between slide-tube-choke and
butterfly-choke carburetors when diagnosing electrical problems in a
non-starting bike.

It's NOT an electrical problem. It seldom is an electrical problem.
It's very obvious from the OP's description of the symptoms that the
starter was *cranking* the engine, it cranked until the battery went
dead.
Even though the engine was cranking, it didn't *start* running on its
own power, but the OP couldn't communicate this to *you*. >> Stay informed about: Help Needed please |
