My suggestion would be that if you already have a camcorder with the right
connection to just go up onto EBay and get a lipstick camera. I got a nice
one for $60... much cheaper than after the "value added" of the helmet cam
guys. Use them for the unique things a la carte... mounts and such. Have
fun.

Me and a buddy split the cost of one and share it. We bought from
helmetcamera.com . They have 2 models the 380 lines of resolution and the
480 lines of res. We went with the 380. We both have big screens and think
the image is good and are glad we didn't spend more money for the higher
resolution model.
The camera lens attaches with velcro to the helmet. We bought extra
pieces of the heavy duty velcro so we could have multi mounts. It's much
cheaper to buy it at Radio Shack or somewhere else.
After we had it for a few months we spent a little more and got the
remote control button. This was way worth the money.
I would see if you have a buddy that would split the cost with you cause
chance are you won't use it all the time, that helps with cost.

Rex, do you have any "real-life" videos from it that you've made you could
point me to on a website or something? The <a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://www.helmetcamera.com" target="_blank">www.helmetcamera.com</a> site has
only 5 videos, and the bike ones are street bikes. I'd like to see what a
real user on a dirt bike records before I buy one. Thanks.

As I had asked Rex, any way I can take a look at some "real world" video
your riding partner shot with it? Looking for real users (as opposed to
company people who'll know all the tricks to set it up perfectly to make it
look great) on dirt bikes (which vibrate and hit big bumps as opposed to
street bikes on smooth roads). If you want to email directly that's fine by
me...I have cable modem so big files are no problem. Thanks!

Just did. Rex provided that link to me also. Looks good. Looks like the
helmetcam works just fine even by "mere mortals" on dirtbikes.
Now a related question...any recommendations for an inexpensive vidcam? I
have an old Super VHS one that's about 10 years old. The batteries for it
won't charge any more, and I can't see putting a hundred bucks plus into a
couple batteries for the dinosaur when a newer machine that's a lot lighter,
a lot better, records longer and uses less power can probably be had in the
$250-500 range. I'll probably use it almost exclusively for the helmetcam
stuff, so keep that in mind when giving recommendations. I don't have kids
or any other activities where I'd use the camera, and I can't convince my
wife that we need to make an "art film" <g>, so using it for dirt biking
will be probably 98% of it's usage.
If anybody can steer me toward an inexpensive yet adequate vidcam for
helmetcamming I'd appreciate any direction. Thanks!

Mike,
First, before I forget, WTF is with this RFS sig?
But more to the point, can you describe this "right connection" on the
camcorder? I'm going to be trying to create one of these setups too.
To the original poster,
I haven't gone to this site yet, just saw the ad in DirtBike
ragazine...
<a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://www.viosport.com" target="_blank">www.viosport.com</a>
maybe competitive product, maybe not. HTH.
