Howdy y'all. I've been riding 23 years now. It really pissed me off when
the bureaucrats took one of our rights away. I used to say I'd have a real
helmet if I wasn't required to wear one all the time.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. You wear a fake helmet because you're
being told you have to wear one?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I guess it's me. I can't understand why some make such a fuss of having
mandatory helmet laws. I've been riding for over 20 years and wouldn't think
of riding down my local street or interstate without one. It's a helmet.
It's not a full body suit, just a helmet. You can still wear whatever else
you want just keep a lid on your head.

Wow T, you've been without freedom to choose for so long it just rattles off
your tongue like you enjoy being told what to do. The word mandatory . . .
doen't that strike you as somebody else has control over you? You can't
choose . . . you must obey because "we" know what you need.

I would be in favor of giving people a choice, as long as their
irresponsible behavior doesn't affect my vehicle insurance rates, life
insurance rates, and taxes. The way things are structured today, that is
not the case. Some states allow people to ride without a helmet if they can
prove $10,000 in medical coverage. What a joke! $100,000 would be more
reasonable.

Not at all zoomer. But let's really think about this...

It's mandatory to wear a helmet. A helmet! That's all. They're not saying
you can't ride. They're not saying you can't ride a sportbike, or a harley,
or a Ducati, or whatever. You have the right to own and ride whatever
motorcycle you wish. If you want a motorcycle that can break the speed limit
in every state while still in first gear, it's legal. If you want to own a
bike and paint it paisley pink? You have that right. You can ride a bike
that is only a headlight and turns signals away from an AMA championship. No
problem. You just have to wear a helmet when you ride it.

Look, I once saw a guy wearing swim trunks and flip flops while riding.
Smart? Absolutely Not! Legal? Yes. My point is this: there are cyclists who
complain about having to wear a helmet...yet most of them would never ride
without one. So, if you would never ride without a helmet, why complain
about a helmet law...that you will never break? Now, if the govt wants to
say that I can't own a Japanese motorcycle over 750cc then I will be one of
the first ones on the picket line.

I don't think you are even hearing what you're saying T. This is what I am
hearing: T says "Its ok that they take that freedom of choice away from me
because I act so it does not affect me. But they better not take the other
right away from me because it goes against my choice." The point here is
choice. It shows innocence to agree to blow the way the big wind is blowing
because that is the direction you are going. You *don't* have a choice.
You *can't* choose.

You are right. Some states say that you must have a helmet on your head to
ride a motorcycle. but I do have a choice even in this: I can chose to
disobey the law and pay the consequences or move to another state.

But let me present this: the issue of choice is a benefit of a free society
but what exactly are you choosing? Are you talking about my ammendment right
to own a handgun? Are you talking about the right to choose to live in any
neighborhood you want provided you can afford it? Are we talking about the
right to choose any career field I wish to pursue? No, we're talking about
wearing a helmet when you ride a motocycle, not because those who ride
motorcycles are less than human but because helmets are proven to save lives
and reduce the risk of serious injury. To me, that's not a battle worth
fighting.

Even then, I always have a choice. I just have to deal with the
consequences.

Let me ask you, are you opposed to mandatory drug testing within a
particular company? how about mandatory safety regulations for the
petro-chmicals companies?

It's about the dumbing of America. Our government is legislating what we
can or can't do TO OUR OWN PERSON. If I choose to smear my brains over
the pavement, that's my choice...I'm an adult. I make life and death
decisions every day. And very few of those decisions have a "one size
fits all" solution that some civil servant could point to in a book.

I have no problem with the government saying that I can't endanger
others, I have a HUGE problem with people I don't know (and who don't
know me) deciding what's good for ME, and 300 million of my closest
friends.

 > Now, if the govt wants to
 > say that I can't own a Japanese motorcycle over 750cc then I will be one of

Someone earlier said that helmet laws were ok because they're a logical
extension of seatbelt laws. Well, limiting motorcycles to 750cc is a
logical extension of the helmet laws...and then it'll be 500cc next
year, and NO cc the year after that. After all we wouldn't want people
to hurt themselves, and if they have access to motorcycles, then
SOMEONE's bound to be hurt, so let's just outlaw them altogether. And
the year after that, bicycles will be on the chopping block.

Absurd????

I sure hope so! But every year, our government makes more and more
things illegal, many of which are of no danger to anyone other than the
willing participants. It seems to me there are many things our elected
officials could better spend their time and OUR money on than telling us
not to run with scissors. Maybe if they treated us like responsible
adults, some of us would begin to act like it!

By the way, I do wear a helmet all the time, and leathers, and I wear a
seatbelt in the car...because _I_ choose to. I like my head the way it
is, and I care to keep my skin where IT is. That is MY choice.

Jeff, yours is the most reasonable post I've seen in this thread. I
don't wear a helmet. Your analysis of the dwindling of rights is right
on the mark. I don't understand why more people can't see the same
pattern. It is perfectly logical extension that if "they" can outlaw
riding without a helmet, they can outlaw riding completely.
Unfortunately the sleepers won't wake up until things actually affect
them and by then, it's too late.

Yes, but when someone smears their brains on the pavement and becomes a
statistic they become more fuel for the fire that says that motorcyclists
ARE stupid because we don't wear helmets or protect ourselves. We're stupid
because some of use choose to buy bikes and drive them 110+ mph down the
freeway, riding wheelies, stoppies and such. The govt isn't dumbing down
America, America is already dumb, and unfortunately, our actions prove it.
Obviously, not all of us, but enough of us to form the ideas in peoples
minds that there needs to be legislation on such things.

I guess my problem is that I actually believe that no man is an island, and
that what people do with thier lives affects everyone in some form or
fashion...whether you know them or not.

And I'm glad you do. I wish everyone did.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
