I intent fitting heated grips to my GS500 to survive early morning rides in
the Canberra winter. What makes have others used and what were the
advantages and disadvantages of them?

VSM grip heaters
http://www.inverell-online.com.au/dir205/InvOnline.nsf/0/657ad1afd2769...4a256b4

$50 or so. Sometimes available at local bike ship.

Pros: Cheap, simple to fit, cheap, effective, cheap, use any grip you
like including OEM because it's an element which goes underneath the
grip. Oh, and they're cheap.

Cons: Switch can be a little bit ugly, you need to work out a mount
yourself, left grip colder than right when element is applied directly
to handlebar (but this may be a con for other heated grips too)
leading to too hot right hand and/or too cold left hand. Still a vast
improvment on no heated grips.

Can strongly recommend Oxford heated grips, very neat after fitting (for
aftermarket grips) and continuously variable heat adjustment. More heat
available than you will _ever_ need at the high settings.

Downside? Well they are more expensive than some other kits.

I've got the Guzzi ones, but it's a bit warm for them at the moment.
You need three heat settings.

ta - glad to know the Oxfords are good. I'd decided, like the OP, to get
heated grips this year - I figure I'll have the GS500 for a while now, so I
want to be comfortable). I was checking out the Oxford grips the other day
at Canb. M/cycle Centre - $149 there, and factoring in my Ulysses
discount.... hmmm... might be do-able before Anzac Day! (I figure that as
Anzac Day is widely thought to be the time by which electric blankets should
be on beds, it's probably the date by which to have heated hand-grips on
your motorbike in this part of the country as well.)

The mornings have started to get a beautiful cool edge to them...

Cat used to love her Oxford heated grips. She was easily affected by the cold being very petite, and the grips helped her stay
relatively warm.

Well a recommendation from a fellow petite-person is good enough for me! I
find I only get really cold in two places - the fingers and the neck. I
reckon if I can keep the cold from getting to me in those two places, I can
ride forever!
