Gday all
Im wondering who has experience with hand warners
ive seen the oxford hot grips for 150ish bucks and the temp/removable ones
for 110, ive also been told there are cheeper versions, i like the idea of
being removable so you can take them off in summer time and change bike with
em.. has anybody used these before are they worth it over the permanent
ones?
i have not seen these for a very long time but can you still get the glove
inserts with eletric warmers?
thanks

My flatmate has a pair he got from MCA in town for (I think) about $70.
The "heaters" velcro around the grips, and to my eye make them look
quite bulky when fitted, but he seems very happy with them - he takes
them off for summer but rides around with them on all winter.
Let me know if you want more details, I'll ask him tonight...
Oh, and if you hunt through google groups, there was a discussion on
here a few weeks or more back about homemade ones, maybe with Gary
Woodman and BTH involved? I remember a link to a website describing how
they were made and fitted...

Yup! Toasty warm fingers on my 91km commute for a total cost of
$7.50[1]
Here's the link to Dr Shifty's instructions:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www4.tpgi.com.au/kkmiller/bike/hotgrips.htm" target="_blank">http://www4.tpgi.com.au/kkmiller/bike/hotgrips.htm</a>
I put mine together with just an on/off switch, so if your hands get
too hot you just turn the heater off for a while. I had some
electrical cable and a switch already, and since The Jackal had an
unused position in its fusebux I used that for the connection to the
battery[2].
If you want to build them in the same way as I did, follow dr Shifty's
instructions but cut a length of resistance wire such that 1.5 amps of
current will flow through it when you connect it to the battery[3].
Once you've soldered the ends of your "coil" around the grip this will
go up to about 1.8 amps per grip, which is about the same heat as a 20
Watt lightbulb.
The good thing about the cricket bat handle cover is that it adds very
little "bulk" to the grip, and it won't slip.
I'll try to get some pictures up onto my webpage soon, but don't hold
your breath[4].
BTH
[1] $3 for a 4m package of resistance wire, and $4.50 for a cricket
bat handle cover;
[2] I had to mess about with the connection so that ti was switched on
and off by the ignition though;
[3] I used a multimeter, but you can calculate it & measure an
appropriate length if you prefer;
[4] My work has installed an FTP-proof firewall.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Hand warmers |

At the Sydney bike show, the intercom mob, Bruer <SP>? from New Zealand
where selling heated gloves with a regulator for $365. Nice and warm in the
expo.
Look for their add in the back of Two Wheels Magazine. It's for bike to
bike intercoms, but they have the gloves as well.

from MCA in the city (Thats Motorcycle Accessories in Wentworth Ave,

And more than you can shake the proverbial stick at:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.steliosh.net/moto/heatedgrips/" target="_blank">http://www.steliosh.net/moto/heatedgrips/</a>
including instructions on how to make your own from
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://homepage.sunrise.ch/mysunrise/joerg.hau/mot/hotgrip.htm" target="_blank">http://homepage.sunrise.ch/mysunrise/joerg.hau/mot/hotgrip.htm</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.rrr2.de/phil/motorrad/schraub/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.rrr2.de/phil/motorrad/schraub/index.html</a> is instructions
on making a much fancier set with stepless heater control, but it's
in german and even <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://world.altavista.com/babelfish/tr" target="_blank">http://world.altavista.com/babelfish/tr</a> won't help
unless you have reasonable electrical/electronic smarts. IN other words,
if circuit diagrams tell their own story, you'll be fine.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ebbo.org/homemade_heated_grips.html" target="_blank">http://www.ebbo.org/homemade_heated_grips.html</a> is another home-made one.
I used to have a link to an Aussie page, a guy in Canberra I think, but
can't find it.
