what is the purpose you want them to do ??
if its just to cut the wind then go into a dealer and have a look at
dirtbikes, they have that sort of thing , and I cant imagine them being all
that expensive and even then you could hit some of the dirtbike forums and
just about get a set for free as they are quickly removed for a real pair of
handguards

I asked if the items at the local motorcycle shop would fit the GS500 and
was told that they would not.

It's all relative. They'll fit, but you may need the
Calibration Kit (hacksaw, bastard file, gas axe, pop riveter, etc)
to install them.
Which things are you talking about, the aluminium-and-plastic
'brush guards' which bolt to the bars, the plastic 'useless
fins' which stick out from the controls or those big
dryfingeeeeez gauntlet things.
The problem with the first is that the bars might be too
narrow ... but if you just want to cut the wind a little,
the fins should be okay.
Ask Zebee nicely and she'll tell you how to make 'em out
of Orange Juice bottles, but you'll need an MZ to go with
them ...

Well, they are usually specific to certain controls, if you can find a
dirtbike (most likely a Suzuki) that uses the same brake and clutch controls
you should be all right. Eg BMW used the same controls on many bikes when
the K100 was around, including the R100GS, so the hadnguards from the GS fit
K100's , likewise R1100GS guards fit most R1100's etc(including my R1100R).
You'll have to take the time to look. Otherwise something more universal
from Barkbusters or similar might do the job.

I recon Mark Imisides would have been closer to making them than Zebee.

I apparently have poor circulation. Putting polypropylene gloves under my
winter gloves made no difference.

You need to make yourself some heated handgrips, you do. It'll cost all of $10.

Not a bad set of instructions, thanks to Steve Curtis:

That's a neat idea for a high-low setting, I'll buy a DPDT switch and
do that.
However I still prefer Dr Shifty's idea of winding the coils over the
top of the existing grips and then covering them with a cricket bat
handle cover, it's much quicker, cheaper and easier.
