You might want to trade your $15000 '07 R1200S for the ultimate boxer -
the 2008 BMW HP2 Sport "endurance racer"

air cooled 1170 cc opposed twin
chain driven overhead cams
128 hp, 85 lb-ft
392 lbs
Ohlins suspension
six speed with quick shifter

(ref. motorcycle USA)

Makes you wonder if BMW will ever give up on the boxer.

Is there any reason why we couldn't see a reasonably priced version of this
bike in the future? (if only BMW would sell off their motorcycle division to
Wal-Mart or China Inc?)

Happy New Year

Pretty exotic head for something that started back in the 1930's as a
flathead boxer. However, liquid cooling might have gotten them up closer to
the 1098 twin and new 1120 Buell Rotax engine.

Did anyone else read the link showing the Torque curves of the 1050 triple
S3, SR4, MV 910 and I forget the last one. The Speed triple had 60 lbs of
torque down at 2500 RPM and was flatter than the rest until it started to
drop back to 60 pounds at 10,000 RPM. And this looked like a weak Dyno run
on all the bikes *should have been" 5-10lbs higher overall.

A welcome addition to BMW's line, but:

" the limited info available on the HP2 Sport doesn't include an MSRP,
which we can only assume will be quite a bit more than the $14,300
sticker price for the R1200S."

It has the same basic credentials as my Ducati Monster S4Rs 998
testastretta. Same suspension, same brakes, same basic horsepower
claims, near identical dry weight claims (the BMW is, allowing for the
normal fudge factor in the manufacturer's claims, probably a little
lighter than the S4Rs). However, the S4Rs lists for $15k and I
(well, okay, my wife) paid $14,500 out the door fo rmine.

Hey, my Ducati is a BARGAIN!!!!

Circa $30k I've read. It's sexy, but at that price they can keep it
in the museum.

KLR Rob, isn't this more you anyway?

I ride on roads 50% and trails 50%. The trails I prefer are not open like in
the video but tight forest trails (snowmobile trails at the moment). Think
northern Minnesota. The KLR is a better choice if you're going to ride into
the side of a tree or dump it in a swamp. I would hate to do that to
something as nice as a beemer. I guess if I was a real "adventure" rider, I
could justify something like the F800GS. Say I wanted to do the Alaska
highway or ride to Patagonia, the bigger bike and smooth motor would be real
nice. I use the KLR as all purpose local transportation and trail bike.
Comfort is not a priority.

I have a hard time understanding BMWs range of models though. I mean, there
seems to be considerable redundancy. How many GS models does BMW need
anyway? I assume their research suggests a lot of people want to do this
sort of riding? I wonder. They must be pissed that the Dakar has been
cancelled.
