Today must be filter day.

I've always wondered about the practice of greasing the edge of an air
filter. I've never done it, since my bikes all have filter cages that
squish the foam under them. I make sure to keep that area well oiled
- the odds of dirt infiltration in that area are far less than
anywhere else on the filter. ASMOF, it seems to me that an oiled then
squished edge would seal better than a greased edge.

I remember seeing an old filter that had a vinyl rim around the bottom
where it seated - I wonder if the whole greasing the edge thing is a
holdover from the days where air filters weren't made to seal on
foam? Maybe from even back in the paper days?

I just don't see any utility for putting grease on a filter edge.
Does anybody still do that? Comments?

Sometimes, depending on conditions. We get some wicked dust out here.
Most of the time I just oil the sealing lip really well. Oh, and I
still use the petrol based filter oil. Belray, Motul, and Maxima all
work well for me.

I do as Baxter mentions. I use Belrays blue stuff.

Funny, been wondering the same thing. Why? Now that I finally got away
from that awful mess that is the Belray blue stuff I no longer use
gasoline to clean my filters. And I'm still to find a decently priced
grease that can be washed with soapy water. So, on the advice of a
friend I started doing as you are: saturating the rim with the same
oil the rest of the filter takes and gently pressing it against the
wall it sits against. I mean, it does have a bolt that holds it in
place (RM250). And I noticed that it keeps it nicely sealed even under
very dusty days/races. I have been carefully examining my filter's
inside and not a trace of dust or dirt, so I suppose the technique is
working. My PJ1 spray can of red oil seems rather watery and doesn't
provide as good a seal but so far it is holding up nicely. Beats
dealing with grease, as the whole idea to get away from using Belray
was to minimize the mess in the first place.

Although it's probably not needed if you get the rim saturated
properly, I do anyway. It's cheap insurance as far as I'm
concerned.
