by now... anywhere you can get a reservation. How long you planning
on staying and is camping ok or ?

I used to work for game & fish and work the canyon. ping me off line
and I'll pass on some trails etc. you might enjoy.

oh yeah... getting a private boat into the canyon is tough at best...
you can read about the lottery here: http://tinyurl.com/33nmuz

I'd recommend OARS for a commercial trip {if you get any of the Dale
family as guides you'll be blessed with memories that will make you
smile in your grave!) and RiverAdventures as a second choice.

Phantom ranch is a 'must do' as is Bright Angel Falls... if you can
get a hiking permit a trek to the confluence of the Colorado and
Little Colorado River with a side trip up the Little Colorado would be
memorable. The LCR is a warm water river and is the prettiest persian
aqua color you'll ever see.

I would just stay with the parental units since they're 100 miles away.

Drop me an e-mail or call me with what you're looking for and I'll ask the
folks if they have any suggestions. Also let me know your time schedule,
I'm planning a ride out to see the folks in mid to late May / early June.

Depends if you want to stay at the Canyon or not. SWMBO and myself
stayed in Williams before but that's quite a trek up to the Canyon.

Up at the Canyon you're at the mercy of the lodges Smile and according to
SWMBO the one on the South Rim wasn't that great when she staid there in
summer.

At the South Rim there are several very old hotels which are very
expensive and nothing modern in them. Just outside the south entrance
to the park are several modern hotels with modern amenities and much
cheaper that the old hotels inside the park.
I highly suggest dining at the El Tovar Hotel. Breakfast and lunch is
walk in but dinner ya better make a reservation. Greatest food I have
ever eaten. It sits on the edge of the canyon with a terrific view.

We rafted the lower part of the GC a couple of years ago. A buddy of
mine who was in the Air force put the trip togather through the Air
Force. So we stayed at base in Flagstaff when we were not in the canyon.

That being said try to a trip where you camp down in the canyon. We
slept two nights in the GC before getting to the lake and pull out. It
is simply incrediable. Once the moon goes down the night sky is
spectactular. While the moon is out it is almost like daylight.

Ours was not really a "White Water" trip as the middel and lower canyon
you just get into a couple of high class threes. But it was incrediable
trip no less.

My wife and I along with her sister, father, and 12-year old nephew,
took the 7-day large raft trip. The raft outfit was Hatch river
expeditions. It was an incredible trip. You can also go on a 2-week
small paddle raft trip. Our small family group joined up with an
annual trip hosted by an eastern college geology department. There
were 6 geology professors along that explained the details and guided
at 2 short hikes every day. They were also prodigious beer swillers
so I fit right in. It was primitive camping. We had foam pads and
sleeping bags. In the morning we had to shake out the little white
scorpions that would gather under the pads. Everything is packed out.
The roughest part was the metal Jerry can shitter. My wife held her
business for the whole week. She wasn't the only one. During the
day, the sand bars had lots of ants. We shooed off a couple rattle
snakes during the trip too. The food was basic, tasty, and lots of
it, all prepared by the raft pilots. Just watching them dance with
the outboard motors going through the rapids was entertaining. It was
a trip of a lifetime.

I've been on lots of trips where there was great scenery but it was
here and there. You had to go look for it. From the time we flew in
until we flew back out, the scenery was non-stop and every where you
looked. The only time you weren't looking at some incredible view was
when you blinked.

I'll be going again when my nephews are old enough to go.
