All fair comments and potentially true though Gardner has a huge blind spot
when it comes to acknowledging the guy that replaced him at Honda. Perhaps
you've heard of him, a guy called Mick Doohan. Not that that's a criticism
of the guy, he's always been 100% focussed as a competitor and wears his
heart on his sleeve when competing.

You will find that Max only won because Rossi and the other main players
came to grief (remember Rossi having the rear tyre blow?)
He has never won in a fair on track fight since his 250's days
Perhaps if he applies himself more his best chance would be this year, what
the first race shows HE is the only one who is in Rossis class

How could he have replaced him if they rode at the same time?

Cos its not a simple thing like one rider out one rider in. Gardener was #1
ride, Doohan came in, Gardener retired and Doohan was #1 rider..don't be so

Sorry I didn't realise literal week was over... but it wasn't as simple as all
that was it? My memory is pretty dodgy but after Gardner left, didn't the
team become a 3 bike team, and wasn't Mick sort of over there in the corner on
his own with his mechanics and crew.. so wouldn't it have been Itoh or someone
else who "replaced" Wayne?

But we're not talking about who 'replaced' Gardner on the team. We're talking
about who 'replaced' Gardner in Gardners head. Perhaps he saw Itoh as a threat,
but Itoh didnt exceed Gardners results and no one asks him about Itoh... but
Doohan came along and replaced Gardener as the pre-eminent Aussie upcoming
champion. I don't know the situation at the time but perhaps Gardner (who hadnt
won a championship for years) saw the emphasis of the Honda team shifting away
from him.. the champ perhaps past he peak.. to the younger future of the Honda
corporations hopes, of which Doohan, being a fellow Aussie was the most
pre-eminent. Gardner retired 4-5 years after his last championship...perhaps
Hondas interest was already shifting. Old Lion, Young Lion sort of thing
