Here is the link to the report on how the THP reduced accidents here
becasue of their oversaturation. It mentions that there were only 4
cars a day here, not the 14 that we had seen(maybe a typo) and
commends the BCSO and THP for doing such a great job but neglects to
mention that there were 3 deaths during the time of their
"enforcement". They also neglect to mention the increased attention
that the Cherahola Skyway needed because of the "enforcement" on the
Gap. This is where I stop, because my mother told me " if you have
nothing good to say, say nothing at all" so I am doing exactly that.
Read and deduce for yourself.

You reap what you sow.
Well, I've probably said it before, but I was laughing in my helmet thinking
about all the pissin & moanin those greedy phuckers did up and around Deal's
Gap when the cops basically shut it down. Now maybe they'll have to get
real jobs instead of hyping a great road as a racetrack and trying to cash
in on it. Before the internet, US129 wasn't a tourist destination. It was
just a great road that you only heard about via word of mouth.
I'd like to see consistent enforcement, but raise the speed limit back up to
55 and have yellow 30 mph cautionary signs. Or at least make it 45 and not
write tickets for less than 10 over. That way the cops can still snag those
who won't maintain their lane, choose to do triple digits on the few
straights there are, or those who actually race through there. FWIR, what
the cops did was write tickets for 1mph over and for even touching the
yellow line among other ridiculous things. But then again, the squids were
ridiculous too and killboy, tailofthedragon, et al do not, nor can they,
police their own.
In the end I couldn't care less about it though. As long as the squids and
cagers are attracted to that one 11 mi stretch of asphalt, I'll see less on
the other great roads of the So. Apps. >> Stay informed about: Gap news |

You know, this is an interesting idea. Basically, the WWW ruined a nice
road. Well, that and jackasses on sportbikes.

Yup....if I'm in the neighborhood I would run the touring bike through it
just to see the scenery. >> Stay informed about: Gap news |

That 11 miles is more excersize than a Jane Fonda video. Do it a few
times then run over to Cherohola for lunch and back and you've had one
exquisite day of riding.

Exactly, but if you read the post then you noticed they stepped up
enforcement on that road too. >> Stay informed about: Gap news |

security stuff.

Last time I went through there was on a weekday on an SV w/saddlebags &
75lbs of gear. It was more work than fun, but I'd seen it lots of times
before. The Cherohala is a lot nicer for scenery. The southern end of the
BRP is about perfect for those that like twisty, scenic roads without the
need for speed. Fast enough speed limit to enjoy the curves and still soak
in the views. >> Stay informed about: Gap news |

The GAP sucks, their jeans don't fit.
Oh wait, nevermind.
Come out west, the roads are great, there ain't no PoPo, ask Troy. You
won't find our roads overrun by tourists and RUBs and squids.
Just be prepared for 100s of miles of tedious high desert, puncutuated by
pure bliss. Then again the tedious high desert is ideal for running at 100+
for hours on end. Just watch out for the jack rabbits.

Well the high desert can also be cold. I've had my ass kicked by Harley
riders behind their warm windshields. Helmetless cigarette smokin' mothers.
At triple digits.

Cherahola is actually the far more dangerous road IMO. Speeds are
pretty limited in Deal's Gap especially after about 9 or 10 am due to
traffic alone, but one could get themselves in a heap of trouble if
they lost traction hauling ass around those perfectly circular
sweepers. >> Stay informed about: Gap news |

Yeah, but I don't know why. I hadn't heard if there were a lot of problems

So Saddle, you've ridden lots of good riding roads, right? So why is
"Deals Gap" so famous? I've seen plenty of full Gap videos and to my
visual recollection our Apache trail is both longer and much more
dynamic (everything from 10MPH marked turns to potential 150+
sweepers). Plus Apache trail AZ88 has better year round weather (never
snows or black ice) better turn to turn visibility (less under brush)
more elevation change and fewer rainy days. Add to that almost no LEO
inforcement and traffic "especially" this last year (they drained the
lake to remove the silt from the dam so no boaters) and I have to
believe "The Gap" is just overrated.
Also consider AZ88 is just our local road to PHX residents, HWY 191
old (666) or the "Coronado Trail" has >500 turns in 90 miles and our
AZ roads are much scarcer than those in California, or Colorado.

Because it's an awesome sickle road?

I have no interest in riding at 150 mph on a public street. I never
got one of my bikes to go that fast at a track. Being a fat bastard
has it's liabilities ya know.
Sometimes it's fun to chase sportbikes around in there braking hard
for the turns and such, but it is too much work to do for long on a
heavy bike. I'm just as happy dancing thru it at ~50 mph smooth and
gracefully.

It's probably still 65°F down there right now too.

Hope there's enough interest in that road that the state continues to
take care of it for you.

I've ridden a pile of roads in my life and yet I keep returning to
that one year after year.

Depends on the track I suppose. I couldn't get much beyond 130 before
it was time to slow down. Then again, I don't ride a 929 either. >> Stay informed about: Gap news |
