Mt. Saint Helens is doing some serious rumbling this morning. They've seen
a "swarm" of low level earthquakes for the past couple of days, but they
seem to be getting worse today. One of the experts says that they usually
hear shifting rock during these "swarms", but today they are monitoring
breaking rock sounds. They've closed all the hiking trails in the area and
are sending a team over the crater to try and get gas samples. They also
said their hearing some "unusual" sounds. Could be nothing, steam vent or
kaboom with lava, serious ash and what they call "ballistic rock". The
experts aren't offering any concrete guesses at this time.

Yup, heard that, pondered if I cared enough to worry about it, turns
out I don't.

I'm pretty sure y'all weren't affected much by th' last one in '80.
Prevailing winds are almost always outta th' W-SW so most of th' ash
had to blow all th' way around th' world before you or I'd even see
any. At least if th' last one was an indicator.
Mudslides and debris that flowed down into th' Toutle river valley
really fuckered stuff up, but it'd have to cross th' Columbia before
gettin' to youse guys... that ain't happenin', IMHO.
But if Dave Nichols moves up here anytime soon, we might just have to
kill him <g>.

ya gotta love this stuff. We live down in Sumner, which is essentially part of
the valley leading away from Mt. Rainier. After St Helens erupted, the
educators of the world decided that we'd better be prepared for the next
Laharre, or whatever its called. So it just so happens that today is the annual
laharre practice walk. All of the schools in the valley here listen for a big
siren, ala the air raid sirens of the cold war era and all of the kids CALMLY
walk out of school and walk the laharre evacuation route, which is like a mile
or so til you get to go up a hill and be protected from the mud flows from the
erupting mountain.
So let me see if I get this strait....Mt Rainier blows, kind of like St Helens
did years back, and you're going to have a couple thousand kids calmly walking
a mile to go up a hill? There are times I do believe our education system has
taken a wrong turn on at least some issues.

Hey! my brother Curt (who never writes/calls OR emails) works at John
Deere in Sumner (he's a wrench) and lives in Wilkeson... doesn't that
make us dang near related or something? <sfsf>
Next time you're in there, tell him his older brother said he should
