Hey Rick,

This wasn't an enduro. Or even a hare scramble really. Cross country type
stuff. A lot more open trail than you will usually find in an enduro, or
even the hare scrambles around my neck of the woods. It was a three hour
race however, so endurance was definitely a factor. Especially at the
speeds you needed to go to be competetive!

That pic was of the 'morning race', which was the C classes, the senior and
vet classes, industry class, women, and kids. It was a two hour event. I
think the afternoon race had at least as many as that, maybe even more lined
up. I think they said there were around 600 bikes there, and 500 quads.
Needless to say, the pit area was HUGE!!!

I don't know if I would have fixed anything out on the trail. Nice to have
a bike stand and all, and I only had to go 8 or 9 miles to get back to the
pits. If it was an enduro, it would have been nice to have been able to fix
it at a reset. Might have had time to do it and still finish the race in a
competetive manner...

I remember seeing an interview with Kied where he said in his first few
he thought the others were cheating because they were going fast even by his
standard. He went on to say he knows there not after he started learning
the sport.

Congrats on working through your problems and finishing!

I did a couple of RMEC/TSCEC enduros with AA buddy Dooley last year
and went off on his row. Big mistake. I had to spend way too much
time moving over for the fast sumbitches. THis completely negated any
advantage I got from riding a relatively fresh course.

Last year at Steel City when practice got rained out on Saturday, I
passed Ivan Tedesco.

(on the road leaving the track).

Then I caught Brock Sellards, but he pulled away at the light.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Great ride report Brian. Sorry I missed you. I must have looked right at
your rig and failed to recognize it but it was kind of a sensory overload
with so many trucks and trailers jammed in there. Too bad about the flat
tire but at least you got to ride. Did you see the guy selling the tire
balls? That looked like the ticket to me. Pretty steep at $260 per tire but
they last virtually forever and when you look at $100 for a foam insert that
only lasts maybe 6-8 races the tire balls aren't such a bad deal. It's still
too much for me but if I were serious about racing and a flat tire meant
losing a championship then I'd be running them.

Thanks! Isn't Glen Helen where they have Mount St. Helen with the uphill
double and all of the "Hill People"? That did look pretty cool, even on TV.

Hey! That is the same technique I use! Took years of practice to get
it right.

Great write up Brian. Sure enjoyed reading it.

I think the Loretta Lynn race is usually one of the biggest on the
GNCC series. I rode in it a couple times a couple years ago and I
think there was around 900 bikes on the start of the morning race each
time. Also at Loretta's the start is boxed inside fences/walls. Pretty
much wall to wall bikes like sardines. The 2 cycle smoke gets really
thick and burns your eyes while you wait for your line to come up.
Then there's always a HUGE (did I say HUGE) pile up at the first right
hand turn (More than 90 degrees into a funnel). Smile<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Well OK then....at Spudefest'04, I am just going to remove your valve cores
to keep you in cruise mode all day.

Great report Brian...sorry you had trouble, but it is great to hear you are
dicing with the fast guys.

I think its an interesting concept. Problem is, I think they would be a
total bitch to mount tires using those. I've been pretty religiously
putting on a new tire every race. I change compounds depending on the
terrain, or take off a tire I just raced on and save it for another race,
and put an older tire on for practice. Did you sit there and watch him
mount a tire with those things? I saw that he had a mounting stand, but I
never saw him actually using it. I can get those Moose foam inserts for a
decent price on my Moose sponsorship, and they have the little tube that
goes on the inside. If anything, I would think they would be easier to
mount than a standard tube. I dunno. I guess I just need to try them out
and see how they work, and if they are acceptable on the cost/benefit ratio.
I suppose I wouldn't even have to run them all the time. Just on the rocky
races. Which is like, almost every race I enter. =)

Anyone tried those tire balls out? How are they to mount?

When I was there he had a new tire already mounted and just laying on the
changer. I never actually saw him mount one. I asked him about it though and
he said it was about the same as mounting a foam insert. He had a special
tool that he used but he said you could do the same thing with a bunch of
vice grips. The tool cost less than the vice grips he said. Interestingly,
he had two valve stems on the rim but I don't know what they connect to on
the inside. And there's no rimlock. When I asked what the valve stems are
for he indicated that you still use some air to help seat the tire bead. He
said that the pressure of the tire balls is the equivalent to 11 lbs of air.
On a hard hit, as the tire ball compresses, it gets progressively harder to
compress which provides protection to the rim. Sounded like a pretty good
product but I could go through a whole lotta tubes for the same money.
