Browsing the KGET website in Bakersfield, I ran across an article about
people who flocked to watch the shuttle land in CA since the weather was bad
in FL. Including, according to the article, a biker who rode his HD from
the BA. Now, I really hate to follow in someones' footsteps, but that
sounds like quality dang fun. Especially when you consider the roads around
Lake Isabella. If anyone is interested, let's keep in touch and watch for
future CA landings, not that I know how-to yet, and take a mosey down yonder
if the op presents itself--I'll blow off work in a heartbeat for that.

Later!
Alex

Watch http://www.edwards.af.mil for info about potential landing
times.

Next shuttle launch is in August. Edwards AFB used to require
reservations for shuttle landing in the early 1980's when throngs of
people flocked to Edwards.

But no mention of reservations was made for this last landing.

I was on Rocket Site road the the east side of Rogers dry lake at
Edwards AFB exactly once, during the Cuban Missile Crisis in late
1962.

The Air Force showed us how to get to the US Borax mines in Boron.
That's where we were supposed to shelter from the radioactive fallout
if World War III started.

Then we would emerge and carry the war to the Soviets...

Any members of the public wishing to view the potential shuttle
landing must do so from the Mercury Boulevard viewing area.

>From Lancaster and Palmdale, the viewing area can be reached by
driving northbound on 120th Street East and making a right-hand turn
on Mercury Boulevard just before the South Gate checkpoint. From
there, the viewing area is 12 miles down the road.

>From Boron, go south on Rocket Site Road until it intersects with
Mercury Boulevard. Make a right on Mercury Boulevard and continue to
the viewing area four miles down the road.

The public will not be permitted to pass through any of the
installation's gates for viewing the shuttle landing on base.

Thanx for the directions! Only problem is that NASA waits until almost the
last minute before deciding to divert the shuttle to Edwards AFB, so there
may not be much time in which to plan a trip!

Yes, that's true. I was surprised that the AFFTC site announced the
landing time a day in advance. I live 120 miles from Edwards and could
easily get there via Tehachapi and come back through Lake Isabella,
Kernville, Great Western Divide, etc.

The last few landings that I recall, the plan was to land in Florida,
and Edwards is their backup. Since all the takeoffs are from Canaveral,
they have to haul the shuttle back from Edwards if they land there, so
they try not to.

You could get lucky, or you could just have a really nice ride.
