That's a useful link. In fact, looking at the copy of a 'devis' SWMBO
found me it is the SIRET number I was thinking about. This may only
apply to tradesmen and builders, but there is information in English
here:

On that page is a link which fluffycat certainly needs to read about
running a business from home. La declaration d'insaisissabilite -

thank you
what isn't entirely clear yet, until i find out whether the van is

depends where - the agents tend to be very local. i can not-recommend a
couple
there's a house going in a lovely little town - it was my second choice,
and i'm still not sure i made the right decision. seller is in .uk and
desperate to offload it quickly, will drop the price lots.

I get out to Merignac a couple of times a year as one of our Graphics Card
manufacturers is based there. Not to far from Bordeaux. Nice part of the
world and great if you like planes as there is a (iirc) Dassult place
opposite the business park they are based on, which has all sorts of test
flights going in and out most of the day.

Eh?
I transfered money to a few UKRM people and haven't had to pay any costs (NL
to UK). I didn't hear them complain about getting less money. If you (or a
trusted friend) have a French account, can't you just transfer funds for
free (I had to choose shared costs in online banking)?

Yes, you're missing the fact that UK banks really like filleting their
customers and hence charge quite a lot of money for those who want to
transfer money to part furreign.

Not just UK banks. Funds transfers from any of our Swiss accounts,
either to the UK or to France, always incur a handling charge,
something like 5 fr (2 quid).

Cheapest I could find here to transfer to Germany and Switzerland is
about 10 quid, so count yourself lucky...

With whom? I need to pay a deposit to a German hotel's bank account
and £15 is the cheapest I've found so far.

Co-Operative Bank/Smile. I haven't checked their fees lately but they
used to be the cheapest by far. Just had a quick look on the smile
website and the TIPANET transfer to Germany is 8 quid. Switzerland was
more expensive because they do use a different transfer method.
One thing I didn't check is how good the exchange rate is - I don't
think it's way out of line with other banks but proper currency transfer
services are supposed to offer better rates.

Thanks for that - I shall do some investigating. I fancy using Co-op a
bit more anyway, from an ethical point of view.

Don't go for the basic Co-Op account unless necessary as it pays no
interest whatsoever. Go for a smile one instead (and I can check if
there are any "recommend a mate" promotions going on, but I don't think
so at the moment) as that pays at least some interest...
Doing transfers abroad is no problem from either and it's a lot easier
from a smile account as that can be done from the comfort of your
armchair. Haven't looked at the co-op online banking for a while but it
used to be a different system that was rather dire.
