Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm using Agent 1.5 and I can't seem to find a
way to filter a post, based upon the content of the post itself. Near
as I can tell, I can only kill it based on the header or author. Can
anyone help me out here?
Thanks, and have a round on me.

Uh, I'm sittin' here havin' a few rounds by myself, so my POV
may be skewed, butt........................
Yer askin' the software to filter on content without openin'
the email. Ain't the object of filterin' to prevent openin'? You can
filter on address, header, & key words within the header. After that
yer kinda on yer own................... I think.

Yep, sort of. Technically the software could check the contents of the
message after downloading it without you needing to open it, but you would
have to have the system setup to download the messages in their entirety and
not just the headers (which is all mine does until I click on a message). I
think the issue is one of overhead, the system would be rather busy if the
first thing it did when you logged on was to download hundreds messages and
then have to scan them all for any content that you deemed unwanted. This
may not be too horrible with a text only group, but to my knowledge (which
isn't vast) there aren't any readers that do it.

You can kill it by ignoring it. You don't need Agent to ignore
something.

It isn't doable. If you can't filter by author or subject line you
are stuck. What you are talking about is a form of AI. Takes a lot
of horsepower and can end-up screening messages wrongly.
I wrote a piece of software years ago for use in military Intell work.
It would parse a message looking for keywords or phrases. Took a
rather beefy mid-range computer for it to run on.

AH-HA!!! JOE MAMA WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG! So how long after I send a message
with the phrases "Praise Allah" and "my flight's at 7:30" in it should I be
expecting the feds to come busting down my door? <g>

Not to disparage your coding efforts for the government, but a quick
google would net you at least 4 open source packages that will filter on
content. I am using one right now called PopFile that filters all my
email using the _entire_ note. Including, but not limited to headers.
Two days training and it is 99.9% accurate on classfying all incoming email.
Unfortunately, as was pointed out earlier, when reading newsgroups,
unlike mailing lists, the content of every email isn't downloaded until
you select it. At that point, since you are looking at the post,
filtering is kinda redundant.
If you can get your newsgroup viewer to automatically download every
post in your subscribed groups, then a filter like PopFile will work for
you in filtering content as well as headers. However, I am not aware of
a news reader that will do that. YMMV

Bass Ale for me thanks. If you try doing it from the Message |
Filters menu options, you can only do author and subject. However, if
you mosey on over to the Window | Usenet Filters menu it brings up the
Filter Editor.
Here you can add a kill or watch filter, etc. and you can type in your
own custom filter expression. Now, this may or may not work for
content, but I don't see why it wouldn't. Try it out and see if it
works for you.

I just tried it out and it works great. I set my filter expression to
filter on the letters rvb. And, as part of the watch filter, to keep
and watch files that match the filter. It worked like a charm.
If you need further help with this, just let me know.

The system that I was referring to is called "Echelon", and though
some people believe that it's manpower and capability is limited, it
is alleged to be able to scan the entire internet and do exactly what

Forte Agent does that. I click two buttons after I open Agent
up. "Online Check for New Email" gets all my email, and "Online Get
New Headers in Subscribed Groups" gets all the new messages in the
usenet newsgroups I'm subscribed to. Since I've got "retrieve
bodies for all new messages" toggled on in my usenet properties,
that second mouse click gets all new headers *and* bodies. I don't
"select" anything.
