Well the height worked well this last weekend. Front end felt plusher
for sure. Now if I want to play with it without pulling the forks all the
way off for measurements can I put in a specific CC amount that will equal
MM in my forks?? 46mm on a 02 YZ250 if I'm not mistaken. Thanks

Not really, too many variables in weight/manufacturer, etc. But you can
add CC's equally to each fork until they feel right. Then measure it on
your next teardown. This is where using a syringe really pays off-it
doesn't get more accurate (for cheap anyway). Add very small amounts at a
time.

I got the Motion Pro fork oil measure tool. It's a sweet little deal. I
use to use a simple syringe but this tool is way better. It's got the MM's
marked on the tube and a stop you set with a set screw. Very sweet.

Sounds like a nifty tool. However, I work in a hospital, so have to
derive some benefit from all those cool syringes laying around. BTW, did
you know that a Barium Enema bag is friggin' awesome for greasing bearings?

I learned a trick from Holeshot KTM for checking oil level with the
forks on the bike.
With the bike on a stand, take off the fork caps, and tilt the bike
forward while compressing the forks.
The springs and cartridge will be sticking out of the top of the forks.
When you get the forks vertical, you can remove the springs, make sure
that the forks are fully compressed, and check the level.

You need to strap the bike to the stand to make sure it does not slide
forward off the stand.
It's faster than removing the forks.

If that was your desire, then when the forks were apart and the oil level
being set the first time, you should have "calibrated" your syringe to
mm's by noting the rise for 25 ml's.

Sure, one can guess based on ID of the fork tube but then it takes more
guessing as to the volume of the damper rod and the plastic hydraulic stop
over the top of the rod. Much easier to simply add a known volume and
measure the change. Apparently no one has done this with your particular
fork. So as another suggested, "just add some equally until you like it
then measure next time." Or if you keep notes, next time you can fill to
say 110 mm then add 50 ml to get to the same level, edit for your level
and additional volume.

Others suggest tipping the bike forward, remove the springs, and
remeasure. No need to do that, simply remove the handlebars and fork cap
to collapse the front fork completely. Remove the spring. Measure half way
between front and back on the tilted forks.

On my KTM its not really any harder to remove the front wheel and forks
than to wrestle the entire bike as required above. Think its easier to
remove the front wheel than handlebars.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

That's the outer dia. Remove the fork cap (don't forget to open the
upper triple clamps a bit) and measure the *inner* diameter.

Then

v=h*r^2*PI with D=2*r

meaning

h=4*v/(D^2*PI)

if I'm correct. D is the dia you measured, v the volume of added oil
that will result in a height change of h. That is - of course - only
true, if you're supposed to measure the air chamber height without
spring installed. At least it's worth for a rough estimation to find out
whether you have to add mm^3s, cm^3s, litres or gallons for a noticeable
change... Wink

Good luck!

The math is easy if you know the wall thickness of the tubes.
46mm is the OD.

Assuming a 1.5mm wall thickness, 1mm of extra oil
height will be pi*r^2 = pi*(23-1.5)^2. This will be in
cubic mm. To get to CCs, divide by 1000.

Damn ,sure got a lot of replys on that one.

I've found that adding 10ccs isn't too far off from 10mm extra in
height.

Now you've done it. Just wait for the geeks coming out with formulas
equating fork diameter, oil height and oil amount...

I'm surprised someone hadn't already done that. I was too busy doing
bong hits when they covered that in school.

Still doing hits? To repost from a couple days ago, and definitively
demonstrate my geekiness:

) The math is easy if you know the wall thickness of the tubes.
) 46mm is the OD.

) Assuming a 1.5mm wall thickness, 1mm of extra oil
) height will be pi*r^2 = pi*(23-1.5)^2. This will be in
) cubic mm. To get to CCs, divide by 1000.

I'm sure the answer is 42.
