I just changed the fork oil in my 2000 1200 sportster.
The book says to put in 9oz. wet, I know the difference between wet and dry.
The thing is I got out about 14oz. of oil from each fork.
Is something wrong? Maybe a misprint? The oil that came out was the
origional oil, it was dark gray in color.
I put in the 9oz. and the rebound seems ok, I didn't take it out 'cause of
the weather.

As your mamma probably said at one time.
"Just because someone jumps off the roof, you doesn't mean you have to
follow them."

I am assuming they are the original factory forks and not after markets
which may need more. If so, check with the manufacturer.

Yes they are factory.
Have a friend who walked off the roof of a barn. Now I'm afraid of heights

"Rebound seems ok" What? Oil does not give the rebound, that is the
springs job. Oil contributes to the dampening effect as well as prevents
"bottoming out" to metal-on-metal.

Also, when you have your forks disassembled, compare the lengths of the
springs in both forks to make sure they are equal. 'Sometimes' the left
spring is shorter and then it is time to replace the springs.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Reminds me of my oft-repeated line to my plane-fixin' compatriots -
"Just because it was put together wrong in the first place is no reason
for you to screw it up, too..."
On the other hand, I'd sure like to get paid for all the corrections I've
made to service manuals.

74 FX Fork - Anyone know off the top of their head why the bottom fork stem dust cover has a smaller o.d. than the top, even though the bearing sets and cup sizes are the same? As they're not sealed, is it a drip or debris concern? Thanx in advance.

Fork Oil? - Changing fork oil on 2002 FXST.........Any recommendations other than Harley's own brand. Front end has always been noisy when hitting bumps hard. Was told there was a better oil for the forks that would improve this.

Fork tubes - Was wondering if anyone had a schematic of the front fork tube assembly for 41mm forks? Am replacing the fork tubes on my modified 66FLH with an aftermarket wide glide front end with 41mm forks. My kids lost my manual, and I'm on the learn as you go..

Polishing fork legs - I'm building a custom and would like to polish the fork legs (stock style wide glide). Any suggestions on what to use would be great. type of compound? type of buffing wheel, like drill/dremel and/or bench grinder buffing wheel... Thanks for ideas!! RJ
