Beats me. I ride an R100GS, and love it. Just wanted to make sure you
knew what you were doing!
The good side of the coin is indeed that the bikes are fun to ride, and
the maintenance is mostly pretty easy to do yourself, and parts are much
cheaper and more available than, say, Honda parts. And there's lots of
aftermarket kit for Airheads.

sharks,
I've got a mate in Gunning (might be at the Un Augural) who bought his
R90S brand spankers and it's now got over 550,000kms on the clock and
apart from regular oil changes, fresh brake pads & tyres he hasn't
spent a penny on it. The heads are still where they were when it came
out of the factory.
Kind regards

I've always thought Guzzi should have a marketing slogan along the
lines of "hate it for the first hundred miles, love it for the next
hundred thousand".
I suspect Beemers are the same.

Pffft, it's an airhead. You might need a final drive spline in another 10 years.

The one-time North American importer Butler & Smith used to have an advertising slogan: "Ride
one around the block and you'll wonder why anyone would want one. Ride one all day and you'll
wonder why anyone would want anything else."

Mea maxima culpa, when I said "higher maintenance" I didn't mean "higher
maintenance cost" and should have said "maintenance more often". He's
done an awful lot of tappet adjustments in that time.
I'd be amazed if the pushrod tube seals have lasted 550,000, or the
alternator brushes for that matter.

According to the manuals, my RS makes 70hp (a bit more than a 90S), my XJ made 90. I haven't
spent much time on 90Ss, but I suspect they have the edge; I found my XJ a hassle with the
extra weight, much of it between my lower legs, and it was pretty long, and the suspension
wasn't quite a match for the rest of the bike... but good ground clearance though
> When the GT gets back after Easter, you can try that too.
Yeah, Tim! I should have my R65 back after Easter, and I could be passing through; you can
try that too if you want a better idea.

I do hope you don't find it necessary to take the heads off to change
the alternator brushes.
I imagine there would be a few bits that have gone to god in that time,
but not necessarily requiring the heads to come off.
All the same, I'd be getting a bit nervous about the valves by now.

You think they are 'disturbed' too? Send it to a BMW phychiatrist.

Dunno, I'll ask him.
He loves the bloody thing and obviously has been a few places on it.
Also has an R80RT, and R80ST an R1100RT and his wife has an F650GS.
yet he hates BMW with a passion.

More things are disturbed around here than just pushrod seals ...

Well, they *can*, but they rarely do...

You should talk to my mechanic! He's been warning me for at least 5 years, "these things
usually drop a valve around 110,000km". Meanwhile, the bike has done at least 200,000km, and
AFAIK the heads have never been off. Has two leaking pushrod seals though; both on the same
side. YMMV.

Reminds me of when I traded my quite low mileage GSX1100EFE for my first
BMW, an ex police K100RT (in an effort to slow down and retain my licence
for the next 12 months). Riding it down Church St all I could think was
"what have I done?" It felt like a big marshmallow basically.
