Hi,
Pretty basic question here. I'm thinking of riding from California to
St. John's this summer (yeah, long trip, I know), and back to
Vancouver on the Trans Canada. Ouch!
Anyhow, what is the story with the ferry service in the Atlantic
provinces? I've recently heard that some of the services have been
cancelled, and others cut back.
Also, can I just show up in St. John's in July, and expect to find
lodging? I can't predict when exactly I'll be there, but sometime in
late July, so it's hard for me to book in advance.
Thanks for any advice.

Tim, that's quite a trip you have lined up. I hope that this reply gets to you in time.
Let's start with the ferries. You won't be able to get a reservation. But if you show up a few hours before departure, you will generally make in on board.
The ferry to St John's (East coast) is a 14hr crossing. You can also take the ferry to Port Aux Basques (West Coast) for a 7 hr crossing. But then you have to ride across Newfoundland towards St John's (approx 7 hrs). This rates as one of the most boring rides.
Keep in mind that Newfoundland is a big province. You could spend 2 weeks there and just barely scatch the surface.
For more info, check out my website section on Newfoundland.

Note: If you ride a sportbike, consider that few dealers in Newfoundland will stock sportbike tire models and sizes. So plan your tire replacement accordingly.
Hope that helps,
