Just sent my Belkin back after the first two weeks of shear hell.
Regardless of firmware updates etc, the router lost connection every hour
or so, and had to be brought back online by hand.
It is a known problem[1], although belkin still havn't issued a fix for it,
and a side effect of it was that the latest firmware update resulted in a
loss of TX power to the point that I could only connect in the living room
and kitchen.
Sent it back, and bought one of these...
Compared to the Belkin it was bloody awesome, two weeks worth of uptime, no
problems, wireless connection throughout all three floors of the house, and
to the bottom of the garden and even a useable[2] connection at the
neighbours house accross the road[3].
Haven't looked back since.

Microwave dish - I'm sure you can knock something up from an old oven
You can buy add-on aerials for wireless AP/routers. One of those might
help. Alternatively get your neighbour to buy their own wireless access
point and set the two up as a network - this does imply some sort of
physical connection though (usually in the form of a standard ethernet
cable).

Thanks for pointer. Short of getting a dog so I can use the tins as arials
as suggested in other posts , I might look into one of these wifi
repeaters, Buffalo and Linksys offer some reasonably priced stuff.

I've heard of the problem, but haven't had intermittent connection loss yet.
Although the low TX power might point to the fact that my unit was shipped
with the latest firmware update. In addition, when I looked at the Belkin
website to see if an update was available it only ever downloaded a 1.7 MB
file of a supposedly 10.4 MB update. The file was corrupted and didn't
unzip.
Haven't got in touch with Belkin, as I assume they're pretty useless in
dealing with problems as all companies seem to be nowadays.

I believe that having the aerial(s) close to the wall is a bad thing and
that a gap of at least 15cm is advised. Also keep the aerial away from
monitors and anything that may be using 2.4GHz radio. Have you tried
another part of the wall in case of buried wires or pipes?

What you want (perhaps) is a repeater. Most companies make a low end WAP
that can be used as a repeater. However, many of them don't work with
products from other companies (fuck knows why, I've never had issues
linking other stuff together). The Belkin website is so shite though, I
can't see what products tehy may do that will handle it. Given one of the
answers to their FAQs though, I think you;re out of luck. They reckon that
WAP's cannot communicate wirelessly with other WAP's which is utter
bollocks.
If you really want to make this work, I'd ditch the Blekin and buy
something at lease halfway decent
