I have an Acer Aspire 9300 laptop with a couple of family movies on
it. I'd like to watch these on the big TV in the living room.

Which cable do I need?

TIA

Burning to DVD is probably a better option.

Buy a less pikey TV.

Mine's got a VGA socket, which is the easiest option of the lot.

Probably one of those S-VHS cables that look like a smaller DIN lead, most
recent TV's have a suitable input, generally used for a camcorder.
That's what I do with my Dell D600

Your laptop seems to have a VGA and S-Video outputs so you decide which one
you pick and wheer you want to plug it in.

Assuming the coloured inputs on your TV are component, I suppose this would
suit you:

I bought one of these from Maplin in Harlow.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=35910&doy=29m12

Despite my weapons grade numptyness I've managed to get an output to
the TV[1] but only in black and white Sad

Any pointers?

CableS probably.

If yer big tv has a 'PC' connector then a 15pin SubD Male to Male (VGA
lead)[1] for the video plus a 3.5mm stereo jack to (probably) twin
phono connectors (for the audio) should do it.

Maplins, PC World, eBay .. decent high street electrical / HiFi shop
etc.

All the best ..

T i m

[1] These can be quite expensive (~20 quid) from the wrong places and
99p from eBay (I'm not sure if 'quality' comes into it for this
application).

Sounds like you've picked a SCART socket without S-Video on it - so
you're getting the B&W composite picture.

Try a different SCART socket.

Or it's looking for SECAM and you're giving it PAL.
