Being a big fan of electricity, and as I'm just about to carve another notch
in the calendar, I went out and bought myself a couple of birthday presents
this weekend.

Modern crap... personally I play a '67 Fender Jazz with a '67 Bassman 50
cabinet.

Too cool.
I just started guitar lessons after a 20 year layoff. Maybe we should start
a band.

No argument here - it is crap. I bought the bass 100% for looks - it goes
great with my new floor in Mantown. I'm going to use it for a while until
I'm familiar with the fretboard, then hang it on the wall permanently and
buy a quality fretless. I hate the sound of a fretted bass.

Peavey's website won't let me look at what you bought, because my
browser is too old. From Andy's response, it looks sounds like you
bought a bass guitar. While my main axes are my '57 Tele and a '68 SG, I
do from time to time sit in with friends/local bands on bass. About 10
years ago I bought a Peavey, P-bass copy, I think I paid around $200.
for it. It may be crap, but it's American made crap, and it plays
extremely well, once properly set-up.

My Dad bought this setup about 20 years ago for $350. He's had an offer for
$4000 for it... Its awfully tempting. I've had a fretless for awhile but
quit playing and sold it. I've been playing a little more lately and I'm
considering something in a 5 or 6-string fretless.

All it takes is a desire and practice, it doesn't matter if you get good
at it, as long as you have fun.

So, go out and buy an axe and a book. Works for me.
