I spotted on of those for sale on Craig's List, said it had the 440 kit and
electric start. Is that for real? Must be an add on kit somewhere. Maybe
with a little filing and bending I could fit into my Hefty XL600R.

"This is a 2001 XR400R with electric start. It is not a kit, it's all 100%
genuine Honda parts. It has a XR400 engine with a 400EX crank, stator,
flywheel, starter, outer left case, and electronics. It uses the stock
400EX handlebar mounted switch for the start button, kill switch, and
lights. The battery is mounted in the airbox, the same way the Joe Racer
kits mount it."

I gots no idea, I just saw the ad and forwarded it along to show another
example of an e-start XR400.
Maybe it's one of those new Fram Air Hogs?

It exists in Brasil... They call it "Falcon" and it is a dual sport..
erh... it's is a road bike. I think that the cam is different (less
power) and the carb is way more restrictive (bike is stealth silent,
the hole in the exhaust is about the size of a 10 cent coin), but the
engine and frame are exactly the same.
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.honda.com.br/html/popup_nx4falcon/img/z_moto_vermelha.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.honda.com.br/html/popup_nx4falcon/img/z_moto_vermelha.jpg</a>
The battery is in the "other side" of the airbox. The e-start engine
is behind the cylinder, in the pic you can't see it because the
exhaust pipe is in front of it. This bike is not off road worthy,
because it is *heavy* and have almost *no* suspension...

A friend who re-located the battery of his XR650L to the airbox had
poor engine results with a sock-type clamp-on after one dirtride...
If I recall, maybe there is enough room in the XR400's airbox, but
wouldn't it affect airflow and all that crap?

Hey, don't say those kinds of things about my piggie! Oh, sorry, just
assumed you were talking about an XR650L
That's not a bad looking street bike. Hopped-up, it would probably run
pretty good with "regular" XR400 parts.

I guess I just like the Supermotard look on an XR400:

Looks much sweeter with the low fender, in my hopelessly warped opinion.
