Automatically places a bid with a few seconds left in the bidding
period so you can't be outbid.

I've been using www.esnipe.com for about 2 years with no problem. I was an
early adopter, so I get cheap (<$25) snipes for free.

No problem with identity theft here.

I do know that these type of services exist, but I agree with you. They
require your password to conduct the business. Bad idea.

In order for anyone to bid on your behalf, they're going to need your
password. This is why I don't use these kind of services. I wonder
how many people use the same password for eBay and PayPal?

I'm not one of them.

Yah, well, I think people who use these should be shot myself. This crap
defeats the whole concept of an auction, and if you sale stuff you get
screwed. Now, if I see that somebody bid on something of mine in the last
5 seconds of the auction, and they didn't have an existing bid, I block
them and sale to the guy that lost to the sniper, I'd rather loose the 5.00
bucks and sale to an honest guy.

Your frustration is understandable Eric... your objective as the seller is
to get the most. If you do what you say above without having such a
warning in your ad, you would probably be in violation of your agreement
with EBay. Further... you might even if you do have the language...
depends on what they say you agree to do as a seller.

On the other hand, it *really* is a slob-enabled world. It's important to
recognize that one of the most prominent characteristics of progress is
that all technology... in the end... must delight the uneducated unskilled
toothless bottom-feeding slobs that we have collectively decided are the
most important members of our society (via allocating them equal votes and
making the insightful conscious decisions to pump resources from the front
of the herd to the back, etc.). We have decided that "free" matters the
most... which is actually why EBay is so wildly successful in the first
place. We, collectively, have decided that it's not just OK to decide the
patents we grant the few remaining smart people aren't worth the paper
they're printed on so we can buy drugs from third-world countries. The
instinct to get "a good deal" is stronger than the sex drive.... the slobs
won... lamenting the loss of an ideal to this mechanism, while
understandable... just wastes heartbeats. One way to accept this might be
to think of EBay as the woods... and auctionsniper as the quads. I have a
quad and ride it often now.

Just as a further aside.. in the limit, everyone will have auctionsniper
other than just us early adopters. At that point, the advantage of being
an early adopter will be lost and auctions will become a new process...
People will spend 7 days letting their EBay bots find what they want to
bid on.. with everyone putting in snipes... and the real auction will
take place in the final 5 seconds of the bidding interval, creating a
restoration to some degree of price levels. The path out is not to
eliminate the quads... Festus loves his quad and won't give it up. The
path out is to give everyone quads.

Mike

I'm a manual sniper. I don't use esnipe. If I want something bad enough I'll
make it a point to be on when the auction is going to end and bid last second.
Do I still get blocked?

Me too. I wait about 15-20 seconds before the end of the auction and enter
the higher price I'm willing to pay. That way if I get outbidded I don't have
the urge to get in a bidding frenzy.

Nope, that's a fair and honest way to do it. No problem with that.

Nah, I always reserver the right to cancel my auctions for any reason.

Not a bad analogy. But just because lot's of people ride quads, doesn't
mean I have to let them on my property to ride, even when they bitch
because they see people on bikes riding on my property.

No, the path of righteousness is to enforce helmet laws on ATV's, and get
rid of the drink holders, then most of the current crew will quit.
