This seems a little strange to me. Have a drink and read on.

I was checking for several things on ebay and when I was done I
entered 2000 FXDS. One came up and I read through the ad. This was
part of the description.

"Title is clear, however not in hand. Once payment is received and
clears through the credit union, title will be sent from credit union
to buyer."

Never ran across that before. I have had banks and credit unions send
me letters clearing liens off titles that I already had because it was
signed over when I purchased the vehicle. Even went to the bank a
couple of times with the previous owner to hand the check to them so
they would give me the letter clearing the title. Never had anyone
claim they didn't have the title to their own vehicle though.
Didn't have the vin # listed either. MMmmnnn

Last time I sold a bike that wasn't paid off I had the buyer make out
the check to the credit union. I sent them the check and a letter from
me explaining what to do, they sent the title straight to the buyer.
Then they sent the extra money to me. Not unusual, but I'd be wary of
doing it over eBay.

I keep my motor vehicle titles in my safe deposit box at my credit union.
Just a stab but maybe he meant that.

I moved from milwauke to Iowa. In Wisconsin the name of the bank or credit
union is placed on the title and you keep the title(thus not a clear title)
once the bank is paid(in full) they release the title then you can go to the
dmv and get one without there name on it. In iowa (all the banks I have
delt with) have their name on it and keep the title, when it is paid off
sometimes 2 weeks later you get it from the bank stamped paid and signed
(released). Kind of a pain. when I sold my wagon to my brother I let him
keep the plates and I got the title 2 weeks later. I also kept the
insurance on it.

Not sure if you call ahead they can have the title ready for you at the bank
and you give then a cashier check they will sign it on the stop I guess it
might work that way. I think they do not even hold them at the bank you
sign them at if they have many locations.

I guess I need to clarify. I am not going to buy that
bike...Overpriced.

I had just never heard of a bank keeping a title. Holding a lien
which is marked on the title, is what I know.
Clearing the title with a letter from the bank I take to the DMV. That
is the way I've done it for the last 45 years or so of buying vehicles
in WI. That is what seemed strange to me.

So thanks and have another. Shirley, make mine a very hot coffee with
some cheap whiskey mixed in. Thank dear.

I don't know as I would want to trust buying something with a large
price tag on it through ebay.

The lien holder holds the title. When the lien is paid they send it to
the owner. If you buy his bike you need a bill of sale, & the registration.
It's a good idea to have him bring both to the credit union & verify with them
that all liens are clear. Then they will send the title to the state to be
placed in your name & the state will send you a new title.

I guess it isn't that unusual then. Not that I would buy a big buck
item off ebay. Well, I might if it was close enough to check out and
not overpriced.

I've sold three Harleys on Ebay myself.

Yeah, that too. Thanks again George. I had to really fight the urge to
sit down in it after I unloaded it into my storage building. I keep
seeing visions of it with matching fender on the other side, and a
couple of wheels up front. Some type of motorcycle engine in the rear. I
wonder how hard it would be to title one? <G>

I haven't heard from Eric yet today, but I did talk to him yesterday. I
left a message today, letting him know it's here.
