I'm told by a local bike shop that the EPA is setting up shop around
Bathurst/Orange for six weeks from early April. (What's with you Old
Road guys? Running out of noise to keep them busy or something?) Just
when I'm getting my "sticker tax exemption label" organised and now find
that the old GS is running 103 semi-official decibels according to my
friendly local muffler shop. I tested it at home at 104, so it's
improving. It looks like some canning factory work to get it down to
100, as well as the label.

Hey Shifty, if it's a straight-through type can try just repacking
it with new fibreglass, should cost you about $10 for the glass and
a couple of bucks worth of rivets. Made a huge difference to my
XLV can.

The other thing I did, to cut the noise down further and stop stray
kittens from getting lost in the headers, was to put a bit of
steel-with-1/4"-round-holes-in-it just inside the end cap, covering
the pipe exit. Restricts exhaust flow a tiny bit but makes a huge
difference to the noise ... pretty much all the 'crack' is gone,
just the rumble remains ... and I didn't have to rejet so it can't
have made that much of a difference to the engine.

Ugly, but also easy to remove once the EPA bugger off. If I get
the XLV back on the road I'll have to get me one of them
stickers ... the exhaust is home-made.

Yeah, I've thought of repacking, but the can is home made and the outer skin is
welded on. It's also very lean when it comes to packing room, only about 10 mm
of packing allowed. Looky here:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.users.tpg.com.au/kkmiller/bike/GS1000G02.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.users.tpg.com.au/kkmiller/bike/GS1000G02.jpg</a>

What I've got in mind is to buy some 50mm perf pipe, some 100mm SS pipe, and
some Milo lids and make up a new one. This one is louvred inner, not
perforated, so it's louder because of that. I reckon I can get it down below
100dB, just not with the current outer shell size.

Now I've got to find the sticker. None of the local places know anything about
them, nor the local car muffler shop, and the Parra Bike Supermarket hasn't got
back in touch yet. "The truth is out there" and all that.
