So after picking up the stupid F4i I drove on down to the Ducati dealer.
I asked for the OTD price on the GT1000 I test rode last fall. It has the
Termi exhaust and ECU kit.
A little over $11k and they'll throw in a $500 gift certificate for
accessories. They don't work on commission either.
If I buy today they'd give me $1k for the F4i on trade.
The also had one of those $72k RRs on the floor. What an amazing bike!

FWIW I have a Sprot1000 that I use to commute. I had them put on the
Ohlins in front and a small tankbag, and at the first service a tiny
fly-screen which looks neat but doesn't do anything. The bike is a
hoot to ride, very nimble, revs like crazy and is fast enough for
riding to work, especially since I also have a 1098s (nah nah). It's
getting 40 - 45 MPG and with 6000 mile service intervals is
inexpensive to own. I'd bet the GT1000 would ride and feel very
similar.

1. Take the $1K, but the Duc and quit telling the NG about how you're
just not mechanically oriented.
2. Cover your new Ducati with "Hello Kitty" decals.
3. Wait for the next little mechanical problem.
4. Complain about the next little problem.
5. Act like a fag when somebody tries to help you.
6. Repeat. >> Stay informed about: Ducati shopping |

I must have missed this or something. Brian's bike won't start and
ran fine without gagging everyone behind him in a cloud of blue smoke
before he put it away last year and the dealer is telling him he has
worn rings? WTF???
I'd get a second opinion. This time I'd look for someone with a cloo. >> Stay informed about: Ducati shopping |

How many miles are on the F4 anyway?
FWIW, I had a Kaw regutted for a little over $1200 once a few years
back. That included rings all around, 4 cylinder replating, new head
gasket, plugs, and a piston or two. >> Stay informed about: Ducati shopping |

How much would your F4i be worth in OK running condition?
You still don't know if the shop's diagnosis is correct.
It is almost always a better deal to sell your bike privately
vs. trading it in. Sure, the dealer is "offering" $1k, but
that's while he's also quoting an arbitrary purchase price
for a new bike. You might well be better off selling the
F4i for $500 as-is and making an unencumbered straight-up
deal for the GT1000.
Assuming the dealer's diagnosis of worn rings and bores is
correct, I would rebuild the F4i's top end. Then I would
go bike shopping. Selling the F4i is optional.

Yeah, I agree. I spent the morning reading the shop manual to see how hard
it is to pull the motor.
Of course there is a special need to remove some lock nut. And the
procedure involves some disassembly of the rear suspension.
I'll need to buy a compression tester that will fit into the spark plugs
holes. The one I have doesn't have the proper adapter.
The service manager has a 2003 SV 1000 he'll sell for $4600 with 16k miles.
It has lots of upgrades, piped, power commander, penske rear shock, race
tech front springs, steel brake lines, heli bars, double bubble, new rear
tire, recent valve adjustment.
Then again I am tempted to just buy a Ninja 250 for about $2k and ride it
while I fix the F4i.
There are lots of options out there. >> Stay informed about: Ducati shopping |

Life is short. Buy the coolest, neatest, most exclusive thing which
causes you goose bumps in the middle of the night, buy it now before
the season gets moving. Keep the F4. Take some time and money trying
out secondary solutions. Like filling the cylinders with motor oil and

If it starts, what the problem? Is it burning oil now? The
tolerances on your Honda are likely much tighter than on the old Ford
tractor. That motor oil trick might not work as well.
Did you change the oil regularly? 22.5k is nothing...especially for a
stinkin Honda. Such talk has Soichiro spinning in his grave. >> Stay informed about: Ducati shopping |

Buy an SV-650 instead. Half the price, roughly the same performance and
prolly way more reliable. Ride one 1st if you disbelieve.

22.5k
The bike is only worth about $3500. I am having hard time justify putting
over $1000 dollars into it.
It starts now. We'll see how it goes come spring. I think I'll try the

But don't tell that to the Clueless Noob, tell him that he really,
