The current shape of the SS series of Ducati has been around for over 6
years. With their falling sales and increasing stiff competition from the Japanese
factories, isn;t time to bring on the new Supersport style?
I say keep the 1000 DS engine, attach a cooling system and slam all into a chassis with underseat exhausts. How
hard can it be? Oh and get rid of the rediculous sharkfin body fairing.

Yeah, but what is the SS competition?
SV1000? Firestorm? Buell's? BMW 1100s? Falco?
Not bloody much. And when you look at the competition with the exception of
the SV and Buells, many of those bikes have had an equivalently long run. I
like the bikes, it's taken me a while to warm to them but I think their oil
cooled engine and the design as a whole offer robust simplicity.
Take off the seat of an SS and you can see through the bike, past the Ohlins
shock, onto the tarmac underneath.
Everything is fairly easy to access on these bikes and I think "blinging" it
up with underseat exhausts and "proper cooling" will detract from what the
design is and cause it's extinction. Wouldn't it then only be just a low
power 999?
Look at the Ducati round up, the SS series is a great series but it's one
flaw is it lacks purpose....what is it there for?

Why the need to clasify bikes into engine configuration to identify
their competitors and draw comparisons? The fact of the matter is
if John Doe has 18,000 dollars burning a hole in his pocket and wanted to
buy a 1 litre sports bike, would he care if the thing had 2,3 or 4 cylinders.
Not everyone weighs the power capabilities on a bike high, but Ducati claim a
power output of 86 HP from the SS1000. Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki can easily
double that with their 1 litre stock for the same money!
Pentium2 being flogged for Pentium4 money....hmmmm

I wouldn't call it a flaw, it's merely found itself urinating again with
his kindergarden mates.
So how does Ducati get John, the brand swinger, to part with his money and walk out
with the SS? Free services during the bikes' warranty period?

Depends on the bod.
Some will want the one with most horses.
Some will want the one that is the most versatile - can take pillions
OK, can handle luggage.
Some will want the one they think looks the best, or sounds the best.
Some like 4s better than 3s or 2s, others prefers twins, some don't
care.
If everyone was the same, then there wouldn't be the variety...
Zebee
- dislikes 4s, is ambivalent about triples, prefers vtwins and singles,
is extremely unlikely to ever spend 18 grand on a bike when there are
so many good ones about for so much less...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Ducati .... ? |

You didn't answer the question. Define the competition and you can more
accurately define the market. What is it about that bike/segment that would
draw a customer?

Power yes...handling? Do any of the Japanese offerings have USD Showra
forks and an Ohlins rear, all of which offer the full range of adjustment?
Pentium vs AMD...but that's another arguement.

You didn't answer the question. Define the competition and you can more
accurately define the market. Those bikes simple fall into roughly the same
fold as the SS. What is it about that bike/segment that would
draw a customer?

power isnt everything
and how many of those suzuki gearboxs are changed on the next model etc etc
how many of them drop $4K off the new price to get the last years model
pushed out the door as
the new one is here that is so much better than the last with its new
colours and 0.5 kg lighter and 2 hp more
>
> Pentium2 being flogged for Pentium4 money....hmmmm
look at GPX/ZZR , ZZR600 ZZR1100
CB series of hondas
etc etc
i would prefer to buy a long time model run if it was my money going down as
that says
something to be said about long term reliabilty with different models

they dont need to prostitute their product , there is enough walking out the
door
