The 695 looks cool and is obviosly aimed at the SV-650 market BUT has
the old crome molly trellis frame & low bars, + balls in the tank seat
and I seriously doubt the the 10:5CR dual exhaust, air cooled, belt
cam drive, 2 valve engine will hang with the current 12:1 CR DOHC, 4
valve, single exhaust, liquid cooled SV650 even with a 45 cc spot on
displacement. Also, a new SV-650 can be had for $6000 OTD which I
doubt Ducati can match. Then the Ducati owner have that high end racer
name sake but then that only matters to the folks who want a status
symbol;)
The 848 looks cool but what race class can they run in? Not 600SS as
they already can't compete with a (750) @ 150cc advatage vs 75cc
Triumph 675's stats. BTW, I heard Triumph is going to have a racing
team next year for the well accepted 675cc in the 600SS class.
I've olso only seen one rag review of the 1098 with 150HP @ nearly
$20,000 with all the remap, air cleaner & pipes (all technically
illegal in the US).
IMHO. Ducati resembles Honda racing vs Honda production where there is
a world of difference between their race bikes vs street bikes. Not
really a bad thing but a snow job just the same-

Of course, the 695 is a carry-over model, basically unchanged from
2007. It is for the "traditional" Ducati Monster enthusiast. The all-
new 696 though, has a mere vestigal chrome-moly frame, only linking
the steering head to the motor. The rest of the frame is die cast
aluminum. That is, the rear subframe, the footpeg carriers, and the
exhaust brackets. The tank is shorter, with a shorter reach to the
higher, more pulled back handlebars. The efficient, simple, easy to
maintain 2v motor is rated at 80hp; with 695 examples regularly
showing 72-74 hp on independent dynos, that's not out of the
question. I have yet to see an 80 hp SV650.
Certainly the Ducati will cost more. Probably $1,000 more than the
SV650, which will make it a direct competitor, with less of a premium
for Italian style and joie de vivre than most other Ducatis. Coupled
with the MASSIVE aftermarket support that Ducati enjoys for the
Monster and all their other models, especially compared to the total
INDIFFERENCE that the aftermarket displays for the the generally
cheap, low-end, skinflint, penny pinching, econoclass buyers of
SV650s, anybody with any desire to personalize their v-twin
middleweight and retain a goodly portion of their purchase price
(rather than practically giving the damn thing away when they're ready
to move up to a "real" motorcycle) will choose the Monster.

A great argument to be made after Triumph surpasses Ducati in factory
racing support and success. If Triumph truly excels, that should only
take 25-30 years. In the meantime, Ducati offers their latest
Superbike in a size that doesn't nibble younger riders to death in
insurance premiums. Bravo!

Yeah, that't pretty much the reason for the 1098R.

Racing is for marketing. Honda and Ducati are succsessful at both,
as both are, also, at selling street bikes. Again. Bravo! >> Stay informed about: Ducati 2008 - New 848, 1098R, and Monster 696 |

Indifference means my sv650 is one of the few bikes Penske makes a triple
clicker for? I've got a full racetech front, with the ability to do much
more if I wish, better braking components are just a check away, luggage,
windshields and screens, fairing uppers and lowers, seats, bars, what
exactly does a poser-wanna be Monster get that I can't for my sv again?
Gold plated nameplate so people don't mistake your small Monster for
expensive monsters, to announce your wild desire to move up to really
expensive bikes so you can pose as well as the Hardley guys? >> Stay informed about: Ducati 2008 - New 848, 1098R, and Monster 696 |

Well of course, everyone sells shoelaces for Payless shoes. Just try and
find a cobbler for your Italian dress shoes. Walk around the block once and
you'll need new soles. BWWWAAA.

Then again there are the amazing Italian hiking boots and ski boots that not
only are top end reliable but also reek of class.
So it is Chevy vs. whatever.
Me? I'd take the Duc, I own Italian ski boots. But being the poor underpaid
gubbmit worker that I am, I'll just keep riding the 6 year old Honda. >> Stay informed about: Ducati 2008 - New 848, 1098R, and Monster 696 |

The seat on that 696 appears to be a real nutcracker. Look how it
slopes down sharply forwards, right into the tank. Youch! >> Stay informed about: Ducati 2008 - New 848, 1098R, and Monster 696 |

After the $700 tuneup on the F4i, I am pretty much done with I4s.
Of course I only ride about 6k miles a year, so I have 3 years to go until
the next tune up. By then the bike will be 9 years old. So if I still own
it, I'll just keep riding until it sucks a valve.
Japanese bikes are disposable. That is not a bad thing. They are cheap. >> Stay informed about: Ducati 2008 - New 848, 1098R, and Monster 696 |

I've raced against many a nicely race-equipped SV650. There is a lot
of race support for the SV650, which is what Suzuki wants. There is
a lot more aftermarket support overall for the Monster, which is
exactly what Ducati likes. The Monster has been in continuous
production since 1993, and like most Ducatis and Harleys, has
shitloads of aftermarket support. The SV650 is a nice., long running,
affordable, big bang for the buck japanese middleweight, and like most
such, has middling aftermarket support.
Different strokes for different folks. That's what makes the world go
'round.
Because some people like Ducatis in no way invalidates your choice of
the SV650, so calm down. >> Stay informed about: Ducati 2008 - New 848, 1098R, and Monster 696 |

I agree. I have put 50K miles on my Bandit 600 and never once had it in
the shop. Other than checking the valve clearances a couple times and
changing the oil, I just replace whatever parts wear out (or jimmy rig
solutions in a couple cases) and keep riding it right into the ground.
For the $3500 I paid for it, I feel I've more than gotten my money's
worth, now I almost feel like I'm riding for free. >> Stay informed about: Ducati 2008 - New 848, 1098R, and Monster 696 |
