Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles>dirt (more info?)

After hearing Tami and others talk about engine swaps and stuff, I
was trying to imagine what my own dream hybrid might be. I think
maybe...

'76 Yamaha YZ-400 motor and trans (or '75 MX-400)
in a
1987 Kawasaki KDX-200 frame
with a
1990 Kawaskai KX-125 front-end & shock
and a
1989 Kawasaki KDX-200 swingarm and rear wheel/brake assembly

Why? Because a) the project might be semi-affordable, b) reliable,
easy-to-service air-cooled power plant with no radiators to worry
about, c) plenty of smooth, awesome 2-stroke power, d) '87 was the
last year for the air-cooled KDX chassis, e) the '90 KX-125 had
inverted forks, f) the '89 KDX-200 had rear disc brake, g) older KDX
parts should be plentiful, h) with careful engineering the transplant
could appear almost factory, i) the whole package would be relatively
light and capable of excellent handling.

What do you guys think? Or, what would be your own dream hybrid
(with a budget in mind, of course).

Sorry, I can't dream *and* be on a budget. Unless I can dream a that
a '04 KTM300EXC only costs 15 hundred bucks.

KDX 200 motor in a CRF frame. Not that I have the skills, but someone does.

That's nice.... reeaaal nice. My problem is that I want the
simplicity of an air-cooled engine and I'm not aware of a fairly
modern chassis that doesn't have radiators. The '87 KDX chassis is, I
believe, about the most modern (and upgradeable). Plus, you should be
able to find one for a very reasonable price I would think.

I wonder how this fella's CRDX would compare to an '04 KTM-200EXC?
(Both performance *and* pricewise).

Hehehe. If I didn't include the term "budget" then we'd get a
hybrid like the one K-Style Kid posted the other day ;->

PS--If your dream above comes true though please pick one up for me
also! ;-p

That's easy. '03 CR250 wheels and suspension, with Pam Anderson for the
chassis, seat, and handgrips. Don't need no stinkin' motor. I could live
with that.

Fred, you have a serious aversion to water cooling. I suspect a traumatic
event in your past. Care to share?

Naw, I'm just lazy mostly. I don't like draining the cooling
fluid every time I want to remove the head. I don't like the risk of
puncturing, breaking off, or otherwise damaging radiators that the
engine relies on for proper functioning. And hell, those old
air-cooled motors worked fine for most purposes. Texas may be a bit
warm for 'em, but a 400cc 2-stroke wouldn't typically be working too
hard and an old air-cooled version would probably compare hp-wise to a
new 300EXC. They (air-cooled) were just easier to work on and had less
parts to potentially go wrong. Personally, I think the manufacturers
should still be offering at least one (250cc-size) air-cooled
2-stroke. I think they could offer a real nice bike in the $3,000
range and people would buy it.

Think about it, you lay down a '78 YZ-250 and your out, what, $50
for a new set of handlebars maybe? But if you lay down your new
YZ-450F (like Cliff out at Piper Performance did a while back) you're
out hundreds for a new radiator, radiator shroud, front brake master
cylinder and bars. The '78 rider can probably tweak the bars back into
shape and keep riding the rest of the afternoon. The 450F pilot is
done for the day unless he happened to bring along a spare radiator,
cooling fluid, and a welder to fix the radiator mounting bracket. ;->

I'm not really anti-technology though. My RM is water cooled Smile

Mr. Fred.

I've "laid down" my current motorcycle so many times, you don't have
enough knobbies on your RM to count them. I've gone through two
radiators. One on each side. I have both, still. Repaired. They are
spares in the van.

Do not simplify things, Fred. When A happens, B does not always
follow. We are a world of soft sciences and busted chairs that pass
for art, a place of emotional variables. Fins collect mud.

People would not buy your $3k air-cooled dirt bike, Fred, because
people are buying two hundred and fifty cc four strokes and xr
fitties. They would not buy it because they are buying $1,000 1988 KDX
200s.

I'm not sure that "laid down" is the right terminology, but my bike
has wound up on its side in some fashion an enormous amount of times.
Almost always multiple times per ride. No radiator repairs yet,
although both are tweaked.

On the other hand, I clipped an overhanging rock on a borrowed scoot a
few months ago and trashed the radiator. Took all of $50 for Myers to
fix it.

Whatever it was... it would have

1) the new hubs that are interchangeable from bike to bike with Excell
rims/spokes or equivalent

2) it would have a Scotts steering stabilizer

3) It would have the inflate-a-balls in the tires,

4) it would have a lower than normal seat height and higher than
normal ground clearance

5) it would have fuel injection and a 3 stage on-the-fly power band...
green (think John Deere Tractor), red (linear, but explosive), white
hot (on/off like a cr500 on steroids) Smile

6) It would be light... under 220 pounds with about 4 gal of gas on
board

7) it would have the new FAAST handlebars on it with matching trick
handguards that don't negate the flex of the bars.

Cool It would be just barely taggable for the street

9) It would have 6 speeds

10) it would have some kind of cool speedo/computer thing and GPS

11) and the Paige Davis/Jennifer Love-Hewitt combination accessory kit

Man what a bike! Smile<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Is that the Deluxe kit? With the onboard video? Or the Super
Deluxe kit... with the actual onboard persons? If the latter, I'd sure
need that for mine too.
