Post subject: How I hurt my back on Friday
Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles>dirt (more info?)

I stopped by a friend's house on Friday afternoon for a visit. His
neighbor had just come home with a brand new 800 pound American
cruiser in the back of his truck. I was recruited to unload the bike
for him, due to my being experienced with that sort of thing and
having four good limbs. My friend just had shoulder surgery and his
buddy who was also there visiting just had leg surgery. I'm very
comfortable rolling bikes out of trucks (done it a gazillion times),
but something about a huge expensive bike with 3 miles on it made it
somewhat scary. Anyway, no drama with the unload and I rolled it down
the inclined driveway to the edge of the road where it could sit on
flat ground so they could start it up and marvel at how great it
sounded (?).

After a while, the owner's wife suggested it was time to put it in the
garage so they could go out for dinner. At this point it was revealed
that the owner had never owned a bike and hadn't ridden anything since
he was a kid riding friend's minibikes. Given that he was already
wearing a number of pieces of well worn clothing with the
manufacturers logo on it, I was slightly surprised.

So the owner hops on and kicks it in gear and lurches forward since
he'd forgotten about the clutch. I discreetly offered to ride it up
the driveway for him, suggesting that maybe he'd rather get
comfortable with it without an audience watching. He wasn't interested
and tried again. He got it turned around OK and I sorta felt like a
jerk for even offering. Before I had much time to worry about that, he
was wobbling at high velocity directly towards his truck and his
wife's car in full panic mode.

He managed to grab the front brake and come to a stop, but wasn't able
to hold the bike up and fell downhill towards his truck. He came to
rest wedged between the bike and truck in a very uncomfortable looking
position. I ran over and grabbed the crashbars to lift the bike up
and... nothing. I wasn't able to lift the bike upright (uphill from an
awkward angle), but I was able to take the load off of him. After an
unpleasant couple of seconds, my buddy and his one good arm made it
over and between us we were able to right the bike.

After gathering his wits, the owner rode it into the garage on his
third try. I didn't watch. My back is still aching, but getting
better. I shoulda gone riding instead, at least then it would be a
"good" sore.

Friends neighbors get you into all kinds of trouble.

Go easy on it, but keep it active- and watch the classifieds for
slighty mangled cruiser parts.

Reminds me of the day picking up my FIRST new bike and having a next
door neighbor ask if he could ride it, I always let anyone who wants
to ride it with a quick discussion about how they are going to pay for
it if it goes south, thank god he could not touch the ground after
mounting the bitch and he made the decision not to try.

New bike, a buddy asks, what you others do in this situation?

This is right where Joe Dowd would make your poor friend suffer for an
extra couple of minutes while he retrieved his camera and took a
picture.

Learn from the best.

Depends on the buddy. I've made mistakes in this area in the past.

I bought a new XR600 a million years ago and my friend asked to take
it for a ride. We hadn't been friends that long and I didn't know his
riding history (I was a newbie myself). He said he could ride, so I
handed it over. He wheelied from a standstill out of my driveway,
across the street and into the neighbor's garden. He then dug a trench
through the center of the garden as he tried to get out in a hurry,
which really pissed my neighbor off.

Here's the stupid part:

A few years later I decided to go roadracing. I spent a bunch of time
and money getting my much loved RZ350 race ready. The day it was done,
I took it out on the street to make sure all was well. The same buddy
from above happened to be there. He asked to ride it. I let him. He
made it to the end of the street and didn't make the 90 degree turn.
He crashed it into a stockade fence, tweaking the front end and
bending the steering damper.

Here's the really stupid part:

He's ridden other bikes of mine since. I even let him race one of my
YSRs for a whole season since he didn't yet have cash for his own.
Somewhere I have video of him crashing it across the finish line in a
race.

Clearly I'm a moron.

nope, you have a good friend.

I borrowed my Agrale (a two stroke Cagiva dual sport clone) to a
friend who was car-less. He drank way too much and ended up t-boning a
parked car, breaking both driver side windows and damaging the bike
beyond practical recovery. He almost died. Sad

I think it's the other guy who has a good friend.

OTOH, it's probably worth the wasted money just for the comic relief.
I have a couple of friends like that.

Nope - ain't happening. I had to beat down a dozen the day I dropped
by my gun club with my brand-new CRF250X in the back. They hate to
hear it, but I insist on having the first crash on a bike. Simple as
that. After I crash it once, anybody can ride it, I don't care.

A friend did the first crash on my ATK when it was new. He broke a side
panel and tore the seat cover. To this day, he's still apologetic. It's
become a running joke when anyone gets a new bike to let Todd take it for a
"break-in" ride.

When I bought my ATK, Professor Dowd put the first blemish on it
before it even left the dealer. Joe threw a leg over the seat, kind
of, and gouged the rear fender with his shoe when his stumpy little
legs weren't quite up to the seat height of the ATK. If memory serves,
he did this before I had even laid eyes on the bike myself. The dealer
had asked if he could keep the bike for a few days to show to some
interested customers (first 2 stroke ATK in Washington State), and I
wasn't available to ride at that time, so I let him keep it. Joe got
there before I did.
I've since forgiven him, and hardly ever even bring it up to throw in
his face. Hardly ever.
