Yup. This one had the style in your second photo above. It was
white though (or sort of milky white). The family friend *hated* side
panels ('cuz they get in the way of maintenance/repairs), so his never
have 'em. And I *say* it was a '77, but it might've been another year
right around '77... I just know it was a 2-stroke, Yamaha 400 with
monoshock and, since I started riding with them in '79, it had to
pre-date that year. Oh wait, I can now positively say it was a 1976
model according to a close photo comparison. It had the rear fender
frame loop and that was the only YZ 400 model that did. And it had
that strange exhaust that crossed back through the frame. Man, '76 was
eons ago, huh? I'd still like to have that bike though.

1974 Kawasaki MC1M-90. Bulletproof bike and would have been hella-cool to
teach the rugrats on the old man's first bike.

Honorable mention would be the TTR-90 that broke the cherry of more than 20
newbie riders (rugrats & buddies). I'll get that one back some day though as
it is currently in the hands of my Godson.

I had a '79 IT400, '81 IT465, & an '83 IT490.
The '79 400 had the sweetest engine, and the '83 490 had the best
chassis and suspension. I would like to have both of them back.

I hope the '81 is burning in hell somewhere. <VBG>

Yeah, that '70s 400 motor in my '82 490 chassis would've been even
better, so I know what you mean. The '82 YZ-490 had great suspension.
The brakes still would've sucked though (compared to modern bikes).

1977 IT175. Indeed, I just bought it back from
the fourth owner for $300. I paid $375 for it
new while working at a Yam shop.

Go fast. Take chances.

I wish my son hadn't given away his 1980 KX250, the one I sewed the air
cleaner for. We had some good times with that bike, and I hate to think
that it's just gone. He says he'll never own another 2-stroke, he'll
get 4-stroke machines when his kids are bigger. It's still sad.

I don't regret getting rid of any of my bikes, except maybe the Ducati.
I know I never would have fixed it and maybe some part of it survives
somewhere as part of a different bike, but still... The others were a
bitch to ride and I was glad to replace them, even if we did do all that
riding with them when the kids were small.

I absolutely second that. I'm happy that i sold what i sold.
Looking back _every_ step was noticable progress, i'd winch
if i'd have to get back onto any of the previous ones.

This is my monotonously progessing "better bike" chart:
XL500R -> XT600 -> TT600 -> KLX650R -> WR400F -> WR450F

(the XT600 -> TT600 step might seem odd but for going "back"
to 6V and tiny brake rotor, the TT was lighter, more responsive
and above all did have a much better gear ratio spacing, no gap
between 1st and 2nd)

Currently i'm pondering to round that up with a '08 RXV450.
But not after some extensive dealer test rides.

Having ridden that very bike, I can tell you it's the perfect size for
you. Read TALL SEAT. The power was really good and the handling was
way better than expected. Even the suspension was OK. I should have
signed up again to ride the 550.

Ditto here. Every replacement has been better than the predecessor. I love
the ATK, so I'm hanging onto it.

Notice how TimH has been mysteriously silent on this subject Wink

Good thing the thread isn't about "which bike you wish that you owned". I
have a pretty long list.

Did you get to try the Arrwos-exhaust version?
How's the noise?

And hows the real world weight?
Can you rank it with WR-F, EXC, CRF?

Is the E-Start reliable?
Did you try to bump start it?

milage won't be an issue any more (12L tank):

I'v heard the 550 is way too much for Off Road riding, the road
and the super-motard freaks love it though, because it allegedly
leaves the KTM 535(?) way behind. The 550 is rumored to knock
at the 125mph door, with the right EFI mapping. That's a lot of juice!

Yeah, but I had to give up ridding with Craig, Tami and Eric to do it.
Sad

It's hard to tell coming off my 2 stroke, but I would say it's no
louder than the big KTMs.

With the bike being so very tall for me, it felt heavy until I was
riding the bike. It feels so much lighter while riding. It heavier,
but carries the weight well.

No issues. Worked great.

Nah, it's got a reliable e-start! Smile

That's the real reason I did not try the 550. The 450 was more then
enough power and I liked the power delivery. Smooth lowend power,
with a smooth quick (but not too quick) run through the mid range to
the insane top-end that was exciting for the 2 or 3 seconds I was able
to be full throttle.

Au Contraire, I weighed in back on the 22nd. What took you so long?

No kidding. Even longer than the "bikes-I-have" list.
