I am in a bit of a dilemma. I took my S4 monster in for a 12K tune up,
and while I was at it I had my cams degreed and adjustable pulleys
installed. A new rear tire was installed along with a 520 chain, and
sprockets. The total bill was 2243.
Clearly, this is absurd, the cost only born by rich guys with an
unlimited budget for toys. I have learned my lesson and hopefully will
be able to unload my pile of Italian Crapola. Granted, it runs more
smoothly than shit through a goose and does a nice front wheel
elevation in 2 nd at 5K with a vigorous throttle opening (!), but so
what???
The question is what to replace it with. 1) Are Aprilia Tuono's as
finicky? They seem to be a real runner and I may be able to get one
used at an OK price. OR, should I bite the Jap bullet and get a used
Fz1??? I like naked, and do 6K miles per year.

You gotta love owning one of those Italian machines. Hey look at it
this way it says Ducati on the tank. That has got to be worth a
couple of grand every 12,000 miles. Check out the maintance free Buell
XB12s. Cool and reliable.

My Briggs powered lawnmower is pretty much maintenance free as well.
Not exactly high performance, but hey, it makes lots of noise.

The Buell's are questionable for a lot of reasons. I like the way they
look, I just don't like riding them. They feel and sound cheap. That

KRIPES! I hit a deer at 80mph on my '03 ZX12R and replacing ALL the front
plastic and associated inner panels and what not hasn't yet hit what you
paid for what is essentially basic maintenace. I feel your pain bro.
My brother could agree with you on the FZ1, although he's looking for
something else now, and it hasn't been a full year yet. I don't care for it
compared to the 12 on any point. The power is ok but a 600 now is about the
equivalent power-wise.

He fell in love with Yeti's T595 I guess. He has been a Triple espouser
since then, if I recall correctly.
Lots of guys that have ridden tons of other bikes seem to gravitate towards
the triple. One of the British Rags had the 955i Triple as one of the Top
10 motors of all time. It works for me, I don't like Twins, and big inline
4's like the ZX10R or GSXR1000 scare the shit outta me. The last thing I
need is another highside!

Look at it this way an SRT 4 is not as fast as a Viper or a vette. It
does not mean an SRT 4 is not a performance car right? How many can
utilize the maximum speed from their ride on the street? My guess is
some of us buy bikes just to say look how much HP I have. I am a
practicle guy. I buy a bike that eventually I can actually utilize a
good portion of it's potential. I can careless what other people
think that my bike may lack peak HP. I never use peak HP anyway so my
ride works for me.

What are the reasons the Buells are questionable? I mean come on you
own a Duc and you are questioning the quality of a buell? Since the
arrival of these new Buells they have had three problems that I know
of. One the wheel bearings, two the kickstand, and three the speedo
sensor. All have been taken care off. Not a bad track record from a
completey brand new bike. That said you don't have to worry about
expensive valve adjustments every 6000 miles like on your Duc. Also,
insurance would cost less as well. I don't get what you are saying
they are cheap feeling or sounding but indeed they are cheap to own. I
have never heard any Buell owner dropping over 2k on 12,000
maintainance. Ducati's slogan should be "buy a duc than bend over"
Also, IIRC the Monster has the same headlite assembly as the Buell.
The Ducs headlight costs $319.00 while the Buells cost $149.00. Enjoy
your Duc and happy spending.

Mike: We are on the same page as far as not wanting to spend huge
amounts of money on maintenance. That is why I started the thread in
the first place. I admit that the Ducati is a money pit. I knew that
going into it, I just thought it wouln't be this bad. I will be
applying to Wal Mart for a greeter position to pay for the 18K service
if I can't get rid of it! .
The last Buell I test drove was about 21/2 years ago, it was piped and
chipped. Nice torque, but it just didn't strike me as the bike to get.
I do have a predudice against air cooled bikes as their engineering is
more of a compromise in the design of the heads and power output. A
Harley engine with a fan for the back cylinder just doesn't float my
boat.
My interest is in water cooled nakeds. The Apriila seems the best, the
speed triple has some maintenance issues (cost, not reliability), and
the FZ1 seems great but boring. Has anyone actually ridden an FZ1 out
there?

Well, I've owned most of the bikes your talkin about (916, t595, tuono)...I'd
say you would not regret the tuono..it spanks both of the mentioned bikes in
the motor and fun dept...Maintenance isn't as costly on the tuono and the duc,
the duc is outrageous which is why I no long have mine..
Downside of the tuono: parts cost is absurd, way higher than ducati...Example:
crush washer for oil tank drain plug, $7.
So, you'd love the tuono as long as you never had to replace any parts...that
said, I just sold my tuono, my next bike is an sv650.

that they are coming out with an updated model for 2005 though (with
