00 Buck = 9 x .32 calibre lead balls.
An 8 shot pump can put down a hail of lead!

Oh, I am well-armed, I have a nice little arsenal that will as easily
penetrate automobile engine blocks or knock down meth addicts. I have
no problem with my neighbors, as everybody inside the compound is
brave, trustworthy, and patriotic.

Anybody *outside* the compound is on their own.

Discourage? It will knock him on his ass.

Back during the Phillipine Insurrection, a .38 caliber service
revolver wouldn't knock down a Flip armed with a bolo.

So the .45 auto was invented.

That is obscene. If a bear (for example) doesn't get the "not a good meal"
message after 16 rounds of .45 ACP, it deserves to eat its victim.

Clearly, a .45 will discourage a person.

I don't know enough about bears, etc. to know how physiologically tough they
are. I think Lewis and Clark wrote that grizzly bears were the toughest
critter they had ever seen and that if you didn't get it in the head first
time you were lunch. I don't know what a .45 will do to a bear,
particularly if one is a bad shot.

And then there are the zoo tigers to content with. If you're gonna taunt
tigers, you'd better be packing.

Yes, the 1-step-forward-2-steps-backward effect of the .45 is well
documented. On a person.

I'm more curious about bears. Even if you mortally wound the thing, it may
be by that point it is so enraged that it would kill the shooter and then
die 5 minutes later.

The OP seemed to be looking for a general purpose solution that would deal
with both criminally intent people and nasty animals.

The .45 definitely will definitely take care of people. I'm just curious
about the nasty animals.

That's the chance hunters take when they tangle with any 500 animal
that's charging them.

There probably isn't a handgun on the planet that will reliably drop a 1,000
lb. + grizzly bear with one shot unless you're cool -and close, and lucky-
enough to make a successful brain or spine shot on the first try...

I did once see film of a charging Griz being knocked right over backwards by
the slug from a Sharps .50 caliber black powder buffalo gun, but that's not
really what you'd call a handgun, and in addition it has the serious flaw of
only giving you one (*1*) shot per bear charge.

That was a serious question.

I got the Mosquito yesterday. It's quite an elaborate weapon, for such a
small calliber.

If I bought one, I would use it for "wet work" or target practice. My
utterly reliable (and very noisy) personal defense handguns are large
bore revolvers.

The one time I ever had to use a semi-automatic to defend myself, it
jammed on me.

I don't *care* if a bullet breaks the sound barrier, or goes through
the engine block of my neighbor's car, if at least ONE of the six
rounds knocks my attacker down.

Will a handgun of any kind penetrate a bear's skull reliably from the
front? Looks to me like it's nice sloped armor.

When I used to go backpacking, I routinely carried a handgun. I
thought of it as a noisemaker -- bears don't like loud noises, and can
be discouraged if they aren't already angry of defensive. Be careful,
however, not to hit the bear. This will make him angry.

A woman did just what you mentioned a few summers back in Eagle River up
here. A grizzly came out of th woods, the mother and her two kids walked
out into the river, but after awhile the mother fired a few shots and
scared the bear off.

Here's a really good story about a lucky shot -
http://www.remodeling.hw.net/industry-news.asp?sectionID=153&articleID=437798

Here's the Treadwell story. A trooper shot a bear twelve times with a
pistol before it went down.

I once read a firsthand account in "Field & Stream" about an Alaskan
horse-packer who dropped an attacking Grix in it's tracks with one head shot
from a .44 Magnum, but I wouldn't bet on being able to pull the trick off a
second time.

Alan Moore has a point about handguns being primarily useful as
bear-scarers, though. A backpacking Biologist friend of mine was stalked for
two days by a Griz in Glacier National Park, and the only thing that saved
him was his illegally-carried handgun, with which he shot just *past* the
bear, scaring it off temporarily and repeatedly.

Fortunately, he got back to his truck before he ran out of shells.
